Our son just picked up this 53 Chevy. Been inside most of its life, except for the 104k miles on it. Not driven since 2000, engine has been started in the last couple of years. Factory paint, headliner has a few stains and seat cover have been replaced. Chrome is all great. He is now the 3rd owner.
He is going to get everything checked out, go thru all safety features and keep the ole gal basically original. I am certain the tank needs cleaned, carb kit, fuel pump, and rebuild brake system. It will be for his family of 5 to run around in. Hoping the power glide is ok. I am looking at a 54 now, and hoping I can't afford it. It is a 2dr. post.
Gonna try to one up the kid? I would rather have his, Its one sweet lookin ride even tho/or because its a 4 door, Thats what I like best about it
good thing its the PG, the stick got the old splash oiler. this is full pressure, starting in 53 w/ the pg cars.
A great car, nothing better than a solid original 4dr as a daily driver. I have a 55 4dr with a 235 and in first paint too. Just drive the wheels off of it.
Very nice, congrats to your boy. Power glide or 3 speed? Sent from my SM-G935V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It won't warrant other threads here on HAMB as an original driver. I get where you're coming from Kiwijeff, and that it lost your interest, and I'm not suggesting it shouldn't have. I think some of us might feel differently about this particular car. A. To mod it into a custom or change out the drivetrain and parts of the suspension to make a hot rod, the cost would exceed the value of an old four door. If it were a two door, and especially a more popular year, then it would be a better candidate. I suspect the OP, who's son owns this car, has a two door in mind to do just that. B. There aren't a whole lot of examples of such a clean original. Since it is a four door, it's a really good candidate for preservation and use. (A full boat restoration would be too expensive again, and too boring) For someone to put it back in service as a family cruiser, fix it up and daily drive it, heck, I think that would be a really cool fate for a car like this. Better than rotting away in a field. Way better than a Prius or a Honda. At car shows I am attracted to originals and usually just pass by the restorations and their old men tethered to them with their California Duster umbilical cords and lawn chairs. It's worn out, but I do subscribe to the phrase "it's only original once". That being said, I get that this is a hot rod/kustom site and we are all mostly interested in modding cars, reliving rodding history and the go fast stuff. Me too, but personally I dig old OEM survivor cars too. I'm not suggesting anyone else should feel that way, or that hamb should change.
@clunker good point on it being a four door, although down here we Hot Rod four doors. Also, the wording was, mostly original, so I suspect there could be a few mods, for improved driving. Anyway, I hope the young fella has fun with it, four doors can be cool too.
Great find! And good for him wanting to keep it original. I think too many fall for the concept that a car needs to be custom to be cool. In this day and age, bumpers, stainless and whitewalls make quite a statement, IMO.
