The shifter has a lock collar around the shifter handle. You push the collar down and turn it about a 1/4 turn, counter clock wise I think. once the lock is released, the handle lifts straight up out of the top of the trans. Those are fairly heavy duty granny low gear transmissions, never heard of anyone changing any gears in them, probably cheaper to change the trans for a different one. Gene
Yeah, not really sure about gear swaps for them. If it's a '53 then it should be a syncro'd transmission, so that's a good thing. Other than that, 50dodge is right on, granny low truck transmission. Behind a flathead 6 they're bulletproof, but with the stock rear end gears out back you won't be cruising much more than 60 mph with one (or any 1:1 final gear transmission for that matter). What are you looking to do? Improve your cruising speed? Get rid of the granny low for closer matched gears?
Oh, good call Gary! I assumed 1/2 ton, but it would definitely change things if its one of the heavy ones...
the tran was out of a 1ton, real clean inside and out. ive got it behind a 354 chry. the clutch and plate all matched up so im tryin to keep it in, and i have heard they were bullit prof so that was another reason i wanted to keep it, the rearend is a 9in ford with 2:70 gears. thanks for all the info
