I recently picked up a 53 Dodge coronet with 241 hemi, and am fixing some things. I noticed that electrical accessories work when battery is turned on, but when it is switched to running, they don't work? Items not working are things like fuel gauge, blower motor, wipers and such.

Seeing if anyone might have a wiring diagram for this car? Anyone run into this issue?

  2. May be a bad ignition switch or just miswired... How many positions does the switch have? 2? 3? 4? Does it have a separate starter switch/****on/foot switch or is it a key start?

Do you know the 6 volt Dodges were positive ground? In other words the battery is hooked up backwards compared to new cars?

If you put the battery in wrong way round it may run but some things will not work right.

Are you sure you aren't confusing the Run and Accessory key positions?

It is a 4 position ignition switch. Only key started.

The battery in 6 volt + ground. It's hooked up correctly. They all work on the accessory position, but when you turn key to run position to start, and while engine is running, the above mentioned doesn't work?

  6. A 4-position switch is typically set up like this, key position reading clockwise:

    1. Accessories only.
    2. Off.
    3. Run, ignition and accessories.
    4. Start. This should be spring loaded, and should energize ignition and start circuits only.

Sounds like you're feeding power into the switch through the wrong terminal. With a meter or test light, do these checks to identify each one. With the switch off, no reading between any terminals. Turn to accessories, and you'll read between two terminals; incoming power and accessory power out (we'll determine which is which further on). Mark these as 1 and 2. Now turn the switch to run; one more terminal should now read to 1 and 2, mark this as 3. The last wire mark as 4 and should be the start wire. When you turn the switch to start, 3 and 4 will read together, and either 1 or 2 will read to 3 and 4. The one that reads to 3 and 4 is incoming power, the other wire is for the accessory circuits.

6 or 12 volt doesn't make any difference in switch operation.

Your right. I was telling you wrong. Electric gauge, blower motor, and wipers work when ignition switch is switched to accessories only and run/ignition/accessories. But when I turn to start and spring loads back to run with engine running, then those items do not work? If it works in run, you think items would work when sprung back to run switch even after starting?

  8. If it all works until you turn to 'start' and then doesn't work when the switch returns, you have a bad switch.

Pull it out & shoot it full of contact cleaner. Cycle it a few hundred times, & it'll have a good chance of working. If it's been too hot from overcranking, probably not. Replacement switches don't come anywhere near fitting ...

I'll try the contact cleaner method and see if that works.

PM me if you need a closer shot of these. It's the best I could do since I threw out my scanner.

Thanks for sending! When blown up, I think I can pinpoint most of the items.
