The flasher needs 1 switched poer, 1 ground, and one sensor from the switch. Also, you need brake light power in, 2 brake light power out, 1 turn signal power in, 4 turn signal power out. the 2 that are the same as brake lights are for the rear. I made a matrix of what i needed for a 6 wire system and tested every wire until I could label each. then when stock switch #2 fried, i bought a replacement clamp on style which seems to work best. search for 6 wire turn signal, a diagram will explain it best. good luck with a color code chart.

Does your '53 have the old type cloth coated wire or is plastic coated? Can you determine any of the colors of the wires and the tracers (stripe) on them? If so, please post them, and maybe I can help you figure it out, if someone doesn't post a diagram. There should be 7 wires coming from the TS switch. They will be LF, LR, RF, RR, horn, brake light by pass (allows brake light to operate on tail light opposite of TS that is in use), and power form flasher circuit. If you know which wire is for power, you can determine the others with a multimeter, set for continuity. The power wire can be found with the multimeter and a little trial and error testing. If the TS switch is out of the steering column, the whole identification process becomes much easier because you can see the placement of the wires on the switch.

    Vertible59 pretty well nailed it.

Start with a multi meter set on Ohms and have the switch in the neutral position.

That should allow you to find out which wire is the wire from the brake light switch and the two that should go to the stop/turn lights.
Now move the lever to either left or right and you should be able to determine the front turn signal wire and the wire that goes to the flasher. with the lever moved the other way the two for the other side should have continuity.
Just remember to mark the wires so you won't have to do it again.
