These two springs were in a box carefully labeled "Emergency Brake Parts" Since there are two, I imagine one is right, and one is left. Anyone got a picture of where they go?

No, I've figured out everthing INSIDE the drum. These definitely go outside the drum ***embly somewhere., but damned if I know where. They're about 5 inches long.

Last '52-54 Ford I was under was in '62, but I seem to recall a spring between lever under car moved by the cable from handle inside car, and moving a cable routed to an equalizer bar, separated, and transmitted to brake shoes.
Somewhere in all that was a spring to retract whole shebang when parking brake handle was lowered. I just can't quite get enough recollection to pull it outta my memory.
Anyhow, might that be the spring you show?

Just went and looked under my 53, no springs any where on the cables from fire wall to rear end. May be something under the dash I did not have my keys with me to look there.

  6. No pic, but Ford used to install springs like that on some cars (and trucks) between the cables and some point on the ch***is or rear axle to keep the cables 'tucked up' and from flopping around. Theory being that without the springs, the cable could hang too low and catch on something. You didn't always find them, so I don't know if Ford only installed them on some cars or if they fell off or were removed later.

I think you have nailed it CS, similar to my recollection, except I was" b***ackards" as to purpose and direction of spring's pull.

This diagram is from the 52-54 Ford shop manual and there are brackets attached to the emergency brake cables and the frame. HRP

You guys are still working on the wagon, right? HRP

Yeah Danny, We're still on it! Kinda uninteresting work right now. We do have the brakes solved, and are now struggling with engine pulleys to get the alternator and power steering belts to align. Parts are ordered and we'll post again on Sunday. (hope everything aligns this time) Engine and ****** are almost ready to drop in.

My 56 has them on the cable near the rear end. I saw the yesterday when I had the rear wheel/tires off. Did really look where the mounted but I think they are there to keep the cables from flopping around when the E brake is not applied.
