Hey guys, the speedometer has never worked on my vic, the cable spins when disconnected and when i spin the back of the speedometer with my fingers and the needle goes up just a little bit. so i took it out and took the cable off from the transmission. I hooked the cable to the speedometer and then attached the cable to my drill. the needle started to move when i spun the cable with my drill, but the faster it went, it stopped working.
    what could be the problem??
is it salvageable or should i look at new ones?
when could i find new ones??

Broke. :( If one of the guys here doesn't have one that works, they can be found on evilBay for not much $$$. Might as well replace the cable at the same time. :)

There are a few antique auto speedometer spe******ts left in the country including this one: http://www.antiquespeedorepair.com/ and this one: http://www.dandmrestoration.com/speedometer-repair.

I'm sure that either of them could handle your needs, but be prepared to pay a pretty good price. You might find a local speedo shop as well. It's worth looking, especially if you live near a large city.

Most speedometers are not complicated, but they are somewhat delecate. You might be able to swap parts from a functional one to repair your own...or end up with two broken speedo's. :(

By far the most cost-effective way to fix yours is to replace it with a functional one from another car. If your car is a low-mileage car you'd probably want to store the original speedo, just in case you decide to sell your car and need to verify the actual mileage. Be sure to get a dated bill of sale with verified mileage from the seller of the replacement speedo unit as well. These two things will mean a great deal to a potential buyer down the road.

    Good luck!

    :)

Ok cool, ill look into it all. I mean i dont ever plan on selling the car just because it was my grandmas, she gave it to me, so id like to give it to my grand kids in the farrr future.. but thanks! i will look into it.

if anybody has a 53 ford speedometer that works great please let me know!!

Yes, I concur with Eric. I had mine done locally by a little shop that advertises worldwide business. The guys were very nice and certainly knew what they were doing. But when he told me the price I nearly flipped. After I recovered I figured it was that or run the risk of getting a used one with no guarantee it'd be any better than the one I have.

And even though we might never sell our cars, I think of the next generation. I'd also recommend getting an itemized receipt; I did. Whoever inherits your car may not share our sentiments and the records we keep now might make things easier later, and can add to the 'provenance'.

Hey 53vicky...... did you see my note above? PM us and you might get one for the shipping!!!!!!!!! I gave SlmLrd the entire pod and he needed only one guage, he might send you the speedo for shipping (I know it works as I took it out of my car when I changed the gauges).

Loose my wheels???? I have those days where I switch to the chromes and baby moons and run them for a few months and then change back.... great to have a car that one can do that with...

Pay it forward guys.... I love it!!!!

I had the "old girl" out today for a nice run. Went to visit a buddy about 50 miles away and took him for a milk shake.... ahhhhh the old times are back!

I'm game for a possible get-together. I'm on the road or in the air quite a lot, mostly work related.

I drive from southeast Michigan area to Ft McCoy/LaCrosse WI several times a year (work related), and nearly ALWAYS have time to make it to Chippewa Falls for a fresh case of Leinies.

California might be tough. But wifey and I are talking about maybe - MAYBE going to Bonneville in 2011 August - is that close to Cali? (kidding! I was out there about 10 years ago but not for the show). Long range plans and lots can happen in a year and a half.

One of our daughters lives in Vancouver BC so we also travel out there several times a year. And I have an old Air Force buddy - not a HAMBer but has a steel Tbucket - who lives in Seattle.

Whew - work, family and old friends - they're ****tered from North Carolina (brother-who drives the #11 NASCAR hauler for Joe Gibbs Racing), to British Columbia!

So if anyone gets serious about a get-together I'd be interested.

    Raceron,
You'll have to give me a "heads up" when you're rolling through WI next time (during the warmer months when I have my car out), We could meet up. I'm about 5 miles off I94, 30 miles west of Milwaukee.

How many guys live out west? I'm in Leaburg, Oregon. It would be interesting to map us out to find out who is where!

This speedo request went another direction fast!!! A good thing!

Okay, Geno. You're elected! I'm in Ft. Worth, Texas. Put another pin in your cybermap of the USA.

What a great project! Glad you thought of it! Thanks for volunteering! You the man! :D

There is an application in Google Maps that allows one to place "pins" in different locations. I know that not everyone has their actual location in their profile, but if you all would like to get a map made, I could giver 'er a shot. Just post your location.
Yeah, I don't know, Should we have another thread for this?
