I have considered the turbo route. The turbo setup out of a Covair is a good looking outfit. I picked up one at a swapmeet last year. I can't post pics. , on a new computer. But the turbo would be the way to go. There are turboed Hudson's out there. It don't take much boost to get a lot of results. Just talking. LHud
Yeah I think it would be pretty awesome! There's a couple of videos on YouTube where a guy did it, sounds really nice and like your saying a couple pounds of boost goes a long way.
Greaseball the generator is supposed to be regulated to a max output of 7.2 volts so if yours is putting out 7 it's pretty good. Why it is not charging I don't know. Do you have an ammeter in the dash? It will tell you if it is charging as you drive. They often don't charge at idle but should be charging well at 30 MPH. If you aren't using it much you may need to put the battery charger on it. In the case of a 6 volt car that has not been used much it may take 20 miles or more to fully charge the battery.
My buddy, George in Portland drove a maroon with white top 54 Jet. Had a chevy 302 with dual quad cross ram and a muncie 4 speed. He drag raced it and sometimes drove it to work and I'd occasionally get a hair raising ride in it. He used a 4.11 dana 44 posi rear end from a Hornet and I believe he said it was a bolt-in! Goerge also bought a 53 jet 2 door [yeah the factory says only 4 doors were built in 53] with a 308 twin H motor and a hydro. His was a light blue and the numbers confirmed it was indeed a 1953. Motor was from a Hornet. Love those cars!
I really didn't want to for the sake of keeping it original but a 12v conversion may be in order of I can't figure it out
I remember Jack Clifford and a few others (Kay Sissell?) running Jets in the junior stock classes that were so popular back in the mid 60's. Apparently they somehow convinced the drag organizations that 308's came in some Jets. A well prepped Jet with a dual H 308 and a hydromatic was good for easy low 14's, giving the small block Chevy boys fits. For that reason they were banned from the stock classes, not that the Chevy boys weren't cheating, too. I'm sure a few other greybeards here remember all the tri-five sedan deliveries that were running "stock" hydromatics in the automatic classes, giving them 4 speeds vs. the powerglide's two. "If you ain't cheatin' you ain't competin'." Words racers live by.
Wow that's hilarious they actually believed it, pushing a firewall back is a fair amount of work! would be nice to have more power but I like just cruising this thing around. So while pulling up the old moldy carpet I found this plaque so I'm gonna do a little research and see if there's some history to this car from its previous life
Discovered this today. Super custom fuel pump arm...welds are actually pretty good with no heat wearpage on the arm. And if you're thinking it looks a lot like a sbc fuel pump you're right. The mounting flange on the block matches too so I'm a little puzzled but I got a new gasket for it and I'll just throw it back in tomorrow
When I was in High School a friend had one of those. It was a flat head six with a three speed stick. I was totally blown away at how fast that little car was compared to other non v8 cars of the time that were several years newer.
When I was a teenager many, many moons ago there was an old gentleman who lived in the next block who drove a Jet and I distinctly remember it having the Twin H emblem on the trunk lid. It was an automatic and I always assumed it had the 308 engine.
Any of you guys ever have trouble with installing a mechanical fuel pump? I've tried putting mine back on and it's just not pumping. I've pressurized the tank, primed the lines and even played with the cam position before installing it
Ended up having to get a new pump as the previous one was shot but oddly enough a ford pinto pump fits just right
Hmmm, Going to have to add the Pinto fuel pump to the parts cross reference sheet. Was it from a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder Pinto?
dual range hydros were optional on the Jets. Might add another 25 lbs (bigger torus and flywheel) but not a lot. 308 will weigh it down too.
I think it was from the 2.3 4 cylinder, not a hundred percent sure. And there's a 202 aluminum head on eBay right now I thought of getting but it might end up doing more harm than good
Agreed, the aluminum head is rare, but if your car runs good, leave it alone! And you would need a head gasket, that is getting harder and harder to obtain. BTW: Did you ever get the charging system working correctly?
No not yet but I found a guy on the Hudson club who sells 6v alternators that are self activating and self regulating I can put the number on here if you ever want one, only 150 and it comes with a bracket
Remember that your car is originally configured as POSITIVE GROUND car. At least make sure that the battery polarity and the alternator are the same. I would unplug the radio before starting with new alternator. That might be the only polarity sensitive component. Lastly, single wire alternators have an issue with starting to charge. A lot of times you need to rev the engine a little to get them going.
I've heard of that too, giving em a little rev just to get em goin. Honestly as long as it charges I'll be stoked! And I'll unplug the radio since it doesn't work anyways. He said it was specifically for positive ground too so this will be a major improvement if it all works out
A problem with the one-wire is that, your GEN light has no where to make a connection. On a 3 wire the Gen light is hooked to the excite wire. With the one wire there is no where to connect. I don't know where it would be connected on a one wire. Just a thought. LHud
