Can anyone confirm that the motor mounts are the same for these two engines? I have to imagine that they are, but was wondering if anyone knew for sure. Thanks!
No, the '55-57 engines do not have provision for a 3 bolt side mount, although the '55 first series trucks do. The only direct swap for a '52-54 car is an engine from a '52-54 car or truck, or a '55 first series truck. '58-62 engines can be made to work with some modification to the mounts on the block, and shortening of the water pump, or using an adapter plate to allow you to reuse the '54-earlier type pump. If you want full pressure, then find a '53 PG car engine, any '54 engine, or a '55 first series truck engine. To use a '55-57 engine, you will need to make or buy mount that work up at the front corners of the block. I just finished prototyping some of these. Picking them up tomorrow, actually. Mounting under the timing cover like a '49-51 car can be done, but you will also need to add side mounts to the bellhousing (like a '49-51), and drill two holes in the front motor plate flange. Water pump issues on 55-62 engines...
You can combat the water pump by moving the radiator forward a bit, no major mods. Works on 49-52 anyhow. Don't know why 53-54 would be any different in that respect.
Thanks for the reply. Great information. I was actually looking at potentially replacing the inline 6 in my '56 with a low mileage engine from a '54. After looking at the two set ups further, I relaized that I would either have fabricate some brackets, or maybe use a cutting wheel to remove the old brackets from the '54 and try to weld them onto my car.
