Hey does anyone know how to remove the driveshaft from the center section from the axle on a 54 bel air torque tube without removing the pumpkin completely? Is it even possible? I'm trying to complete a mock up on an LQ4 engine and NV3500 but I need the driveshaft removed preferably without removing the axles because I still need to move the vehicle from point to point. Any ideas?

  2. Ya, when we had mine all apart I think we pulled the axels out a little. If your swapping out the rear end anyway you could just cut the torque tube and drive shaft off. They aren't worth anything anyway.

If your car was a Powerglide model, the rear end IS worth something. It would/should be a 3.55 ratio and those are sought by guys with stick shift cars to change to a more highway friendly gear.

Do you have the open drive axle ***embly you intend to use? If so, why not swap it in now?
If not, maybe now is good time for that to be acquired and installed.

Yes it is the 2 speed powerglide automatic. I took the trans out and looking to sell that but I didn't know if I could keep the axles inside the housing or not with the center section out. I'm going to rid of all the original drivetrain for the new drivetrain. Going to put a 03 6.0 in her with a 92 NV3500 and a 96 9c1 axle disc

Pull the entire third member/torque tube, and reinstall the axles with a section of tubing "splicing" the axles together. That will enable you to still move the car around, and should't really cost much of anything. I don't believe there's any way to remove just the driveshaft itself without major dis***embly. There was someone who posted pics a fews years ago of a driveshaft from a 49-54 Chevrolet that had come "undone" is a spiraling sort of fashion, as they are a hollow tube. It was hard to believe that could happen. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
