54 Chevy 2 spd power glide problem

I have a power glide that works just great but shifts from first to second too quick and won't shift down when I press the accelorator to the floor. It won't shift down into p***ing gear. I got under it and pulled the linkage off the the ****** and the arm swings or moves freely on the trans. Any ideas?
