On my 1954 dodge royal , my turn signal lever on the column will not return to the neutral position and a left turn is made. I installed a turn signal slide mechanism under the steering wheel where the lever screws into it is brand new" nos" item and another one off my other 54 dodge that works fine but still no luck with it to cancel in the neutral position. I'm thinking now maybe it could be that notched area under the steering wheel that trips sliding plate mechanism . it stops blinking but just doesn't return to the center position . When that happens , the left brake light will not lite up until you center the blinker arm to center position . anyone have any problem like this on there rides ? Thanks guys ! Attached Thumbnails
The workings look to have a coating of rust. I recommend you disassemble the switch, soda blast the pieces to remove the heavy dirt/rust scale, then polish the pieces to smooth them. Cad plate them to prevent rust in the future, or at lease paint them with flecto varathane. Rust is preventing smooth movement, compromising the return spring. Look closely at the ball bearing under the top plate. Lightly grease all contact points after restoring the condition of the surfaces.
That pic was the original turn signal mechanism which is pretty crusty .... but I did install a brand new nos and and very very clean one and still had no results.. Just trying to figure out how the turn signal mechanism works ... the underside of the steering wheel has to catch " ride up against " something and make it return to neutral position. my shop manual does't tell you swat . any ideas ?
Ha my 57Chevy turn signal lever doesn't return from either side! I felt like the proverbial old lady on the highway today cruising with my left blinker on for who knows how long. Welcome to the club. Good luck fixing yours, I just live with mine
wheeldog57. I don't have the problem with the blinker light staying on and flashing with mind but when it doees not return to center it blocks the signal for the stop light on that side until I manual center the blinker lever.
fixed the problem with the turn signal cancellation . it turned out to be wear and tear or an adjustment to the signal mechanism with the spring. tolorences are pretty close where they rub. I had to bend the left upper tab on the mechansim with the spring for the left turn cancellation.. . works fine now . had to do the same thing to my 54 royal 4 door also. It never worked either as long as I had it.
