There are more ways to approach this question than anyone cares to suggest, but I'm looking for advice on doing a cross steer on my 54 F100. I am even giving some thought to leaving the stock steering in, but somehow I think I will be happier to eliminate the bump steer issues now than later. Considering putting the truck body on a 73 torino ch***is, but am not sure how to modify the perimeter frame to put the truck body on it except the outer "car rails" need to be cut out of the way-- or cut the torino stub and graft it on the F rails. Suggestions, comments? By the way, installing a 4 cyl turbo diesel w/auto 4 speed- a little on the porky side. Thanks.
You are right about several options. I have seen several power steering setups using a cross shaft to the drag link on the stock axle. The entire torino ch***is sounds like a nightmare...Personally...I have done it the hard way and made a frame frome scratch with 2 x 6 square, and added simple subframes on others. The volare fits easily, the GM styles fit if you graft rails. Might do a search on here and see what pops up.
You should look into a Jaguar xj6 front end. Lots of good info on here about them if you do a search. Use xj12 springs for the weight of that 4bt I think you will be using and you should be good to go. B
Another option if the Jag isn't obtainable is a Volare front end. You'll be able to adjust the ride height a bit with the torsion bars, I have one in my 54.
do you have anymore pictures of the volare conversion. It look actually really nice. I was considering a jag conversion on my 56 but when I saw this it seemed like another good idea
I have a couple of when I took it apart. There used to be a install tutorial of sorts on FTE www.ford-trucks.com in their 48 to 60 forum, I'm sure a Google search will bring up the conversion also.
