Removed the dash out of my 54 Customline and after 2 hours of work it is now ready for a make over. What I need help with is taking off the steering wheel. I have tried to pull, twist and anything I can think of and it will not come off.

Any secret to taking this off?

I have been all over the net for inspiration on changing the dash layout to accept the 2 1/2 inch pods. May take out the radio and clock, vent knobs and who knows what else.

    thanks in advance

A steering wheel puller is the only way to get that ****er off of there short of dynamite! Most auto parts stores rent them, some even loan 'em for free! Not rocket science but sometimes it takes extraordinary patience to keep from reaching for the BFH...

    Good luck!

Did you get the horn ring off already? That's where I am stuck. I tried pushing and turning it, but I think I need another person to hold the wheel while I do that.

Once you remove the nut spray the shaft with PB BLASTER while you put side to side pressure on the wheel wait about and hour repeat and let sit overnight and use a good puller.I have had this unit over five years http://www.harborfreight.com/46-piece-bolt-puller-set-37824.html and it has worked great on steering wheels and harmonic balancers,Some of the bolts I replaced with grade 8's.

Nothing fancy needed for a puller for a steering wheel. A piece of 1/4 inch steel with some holes and two 5/16 fine bolts with washers is all I use. If its not rusted in place, it should pop right off.

Sorry for the confusion but what I meant is the horn ring ***embly. Can't get if off the steering wheel to access the nun.

Jeff, have not seen pictures of Primer's 54 but I will contact to check them out. I was able to hunt down a 43 chevy grill that my be used in place of the original ford grill.

  8. you need to push down on the middle at the same time turning it counter-clockwise..i might not seem like it wants to go but it will. watch pushing down on the ring cause you can bend it.

I swear I read a long write-up by HRP about his custom dash a while back...but I've been searching the social group and the list of threads started by HRP over the years and can't find it... Does anyone else remember this or did I dream the whole thing up?

I'm in the same boat as OP and I'm betting he'd like to read that thread as much as I would. If someone could link to it that would be awesome.
