Customs 54 Merc taillights

Can someone tell me how the 54 Merc taillights mount to the bezels? I bought a repop bezel and the tailights but need whatever it is that mounts the tailights to the bezels.

I had a 54 for about 7 years and latched on to every good tail light assembly I could find (1960's). However, I really don't remember how they went together. It seems like there was a solid piece that went on the back, but my memory isn't that good.

But wait, I have a 54 Service manual. Unfortunately it doesn't have a break down of the assembly. Maybe this will help some.
