greetings, I am working on my 54 Pontiac cat... I have never messed with some of this type of suspension before. the upper and lower control arm pins ( pins that holds the upright to the control arms) both have rubber cups around them, I am ***uming it is to keep dirt out, how critical are these rubbers? I also have some play in the upper pin on the driver side, it seems to be the upright moving and not the threaded insert in the upright, does that mean it is worn out and needs replaced, or does it mean that it is dry and needs greased??? will grease stop the play??? thanks Scott
No, the grease will not stop the ‘play’. Those pivot points are a multi-piece affair with the put bushings that screw into the end of the control arm, a threaded pin and another threaded bushing clamped into the upright end. All of that provides for both the necessary pivot as the suspension articulates AND the inner pin/bushing provides for caster adjustment. If you want to repair it, I suggest you buy a Shop Manual for your car.....should be available from several sources.....or an old Motors Repair Manual for that era. FAXON sells shop manual reprints.
