somewhere else i asked im trying to get the drain bolt out of the rearend in my 54 customline the fill bolt i can get loose with a 3/8" ratchet extension but the drain bolt is between a 1/4" and 3/8" so im guessing 5/16". so i thought of getting a piece of 5/16 square stock with a crescent.but i rather use a proper tool for the job.any feedback would be appreciated.

  2. i have the same problem with my 55 fairlane..it actually takes a special tool... so here's what you do..clean the hell out of the drain plug..and weld whatever size nut you have laying around to it.that way you can use a socket on it..or if you do happen to get it out..replace it right away with a new plug.

It is 5/16". You can get the 5/16 drain plug socket from your MAC tool guy. Or any other competant tool peddler for that matter. ( I think mine are Snap-on) But your square stock idea will work in a pinch. keep in mind the stock is kind of soft and you might twist it off a time or two. I used to change oil in my 54 rear every engine oil change. Just because gear lube was cheap and gears are generally not.
