Technical 54 WCFB woes and my incompetence

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Gary Kitchens, May 19, 2023.

  1. I just put in a brand new master that cost 455 bucks plus shipping. the booster is hooked to the master cylinder by a feed line and there are three bleeder valves on the booster. I got the air out and couldn’t get pedal, then I ran to all the other six bleeder valves and I’m bleeding and pumping and I’m bleeding again, and then discovered that the fluid is pumping into the brake booster and up the vacuum line into the engine.

I am trying to source a new old stock or new brake booster and my shop manuals that I have do not explain the vacuum brake booster system on this New Yorker. Unfortunately, it’s a motors manual from 56 and not an actual Chrysler manual.

I already sent an email off to a gentleman that rebuilds them over in Lynnwood. He was formerly in Portland. I’m waiting for a reply back from him also.

Now I recall brake fluid burning a whitish hue, not blue, but since the smoke is gone, good deal.
Is that brake set up referred to as a “treadle vac” by chance?

There a lotta good in owning a 50’s car with manual brakes but once you leave the bottom feeder cheaper cars of the era cars were loaded up with PS, PB, Power seats and windows…..tougher to fix now..good luck.

  4. I’m going to send it to Dewey over in Lynnwood hopefully and I’ll be test driving it tomorrow. I got all of the brake fluid out of the cylinders and I got the oil changed. I just open the smaller diameter piston in this master cylinder is sufficient for the braking needs of this car without the booster engaged.

  5. Gary, before you chase your tail for days on end on this part of the project, take a deep breath, pour a cup of coffee, and call Kanter (or other suppliers that appear in places like Hemming's) and see if you can get a circuit / parts drawing to work from. Work smarter not harder! With the toll this car has taken on your brain cells thus far, I think you owe it to yourself to pick other people's brains for a bit.
    Good luck!

  6. Oh I’m not going to bother, the unit is simple enough, removing it is a little feisty, but the rebuild o will outsource to Dewey. Installation and bleeding it is simple enough.
