55’ with original column and a 302 with a AOD transmission. Is there a shifter cable that works for this setup? Or do I need to get a floor mounted shifter? Thanks- Brandon
Not sure on the column shift but I utilized the stock '93 Mustang floor shifter and cable on my '54 with 5.0/AOD combo. Pretty much a bolt in, saved a lot of money and works flawlessly.
Lokar makes what you need but you have to drop the trans pan to install. I made one that works just fine.
IIRC, the cars were like the birds. P R N D L for the Fordo’s. So you’re off on the detents in the column, probably only giving you D & L for overdrive and 3rd. I think @jimmy six on here has a Cruise o in a 56, and he’s got the linkage working right on it. He may have some tips. Or you may not care, direct and o/d may be enough. The neutral safety and backup lights may require attention too. Some old fordo’s only started in N. Being in Seattle with a fishing fleet and private boating community I’ve always gone to the boat guys and had a Morse cable made up for the length and fittings I needed. Then it’s making the mounting brackets, etc. By now the floor shift probably looks pretty good.
Will probably need to find a shifty arm for the trans that will work with the original rod, that is what I done in my 55 but I have a C-4 and use the original rod, The pan will have to be dropped to remove it,Ford used a different arm for each application and if you can find a arm that points to the 9 o clock position it should work with the original rod. I am more familiar with the arms for the C-4,FMX and C-6s then with the AOD but the one I used for the C-4 came from a truck application.
I lengthened the arm on the column by the diameter of the rubber grommet on my 56 and shortened the the arm on the transmission 1/2”, like said above a Cruise-O-Matic, ant that gave me the extra on the indicator for the extra spot. In the photo there is a white and green dot on each side of the “Dr” for the Drive for this transmission.
