Customs 55 230 flathead Plymouth Help.

    Removed timing cover seal and cleaned up the cover forgot to see which way the seal goes in, some help please.

    My seal doesn't look like that one. Or is that just an example?

    The lip points in toward the oil. Some have a dirt seal that usually has a smaller lip, which points out. Easiest way to tell which way is in or out is to look at the metal part. The side that is totally closed off by the metal faces out. On the picture posted by 73RR, the seal on the left shows the outer side. If I remember correctly, the timing cover on these engines required a locating sleeve that went around the crankshaft snoot for alignment purposes. The cover slid over the sleeve, a couple of bolts installed and the sleeve pulled out. I suppose you could align it with the crank pulley. If it's out of line it will leak. Have fun..............

    Glenn's right. Rule of thumb, lip faces the side you want to contain.
