Let's talk about an easy way to lift stock straight axle - leaf spring 55 -59 Chevy Trk. front ends. We hear alot about drop straight axle projects but what about straight axle front lift. Can you add a lift block under leaf springs? Will it be safe to drive? What other components will it effect, steering, etc? Show us some of your do it you're self engineering! Remember to have plenty of pictures of gasser style trucks.
Yes you can use a block but you have to change the drag link too. any time you alter the suspension geometry some thing will change. The old rule for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. OldWolf
The old rule of thumb is, NEVER use blocks up front. As they are far from perfect, what happens when they fail? Out back isn't as big of a deal. Try some re-arched springs for your height.
Yes, blocks on the front suspension is illegal in most if not all states as a violation of the Vehicle Code. Re-arched leaf springs, or taller leaf springs. Or in the case you speak of you need to take the "drop" out of the axle. Even though the axle is stock it goes up on the ends for the spindles.
I've been rolling this question around in my head for a while. Best I've come up with is re-arched springs or a straight axle. The front is alreay kind of up there, if you only need a couple more inches I'd just go with re-arched springs. However, I saw a picture of a 57 GMC with a straight axle which I have not been able to get out of my head. It was totally bitchin', and I may have to start looking for a straight axle soon. Here is a thread I started about the GMC I'm talking about: https://proxify.com/p/001110A101111...3686f777468726561642e7068703f743d323338313837
This has been on my mind with '58 F100, too... I want a bit of altitude, but, the problem with blocks in front is side-loading...the rear don't steer, nor is it critically controlling your trajectory if the blocks fail. They have been known to pop out, or at least move, when exposed to the forces of a steering axle. I think I am going with re-arched/more arch springs, because I am not trying to get it up there too high. Perhaps some dropped brackets for the springs, also?
