I recently bought a 55 chevy 3100 big window with a seized 283 V8. Want to do a later model SBC 327/350 swap but want to keep the original manual bell housing which has a T5 transmission. Will that old bell housing bolt to a mid 80s SBC? Current 283 engine starter bolts to bell housing not engine. Can you use late model starter with the original bell housing?

you can just pull the engine and swap the new one right in, no problem. Might make sure it has the front mount holes in the block, although I think they all do.

The crankshaft changed in 1986, they went to a smaller flange and one piece rear main seal. So if you have one of those, you need to use the correct flywheel for the engine.

The starter..you can use old or new. I'd use the old design, since it locates it properly, no shimming required.
