So I picked up a 55 chevy p/u from my brother-in-law about a year ago and decided to start building it. I purchased an 88 chevy burb for $800. It worked great for yankin out the 454 and TH400. Anyway, the plan for this truck is for the rockers to be on the floor with the bags empty. A previous owner grafted in a late 70's camero front subframe for the IFS, but did a horrible job and it will probably get cut out and re-done. I did not realize it already had BBC mounts of the IFS. Was an awesome surprise when the 454 dropped right in just like it was home. Doing some initial measuring on the suspension, it looks like the the front subframe will need to be raised approx 5-1/2" with stock spindles to get the front low enough. Another option would be channel the body. I already plan to chop it 4", and thought channeling would make the inside look smaller. Are there other options out there? The body is currently off the chasis and knowing the graft isn't cleanly done, is raising the front subframe overall the best option in this case? What have some of you done with the front suspension? Any pictures you have would be awesome!!
pics from you would help us too..... and 2nd series? or first? if it's second welcome to the "Task Force" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDZm7w-IovM
2nd series. Here are a couple photos of where I am now with it. I'm sure you can see the crappy work.
You might want to make sure that they are bbc mounts. I dropped a bbc in a 71 camaro and it droped in, But when I went to shut the hood it would hit the air cleaner. Found out the sbc mounts were sitting a little higher than the bbc mounts. You will not have clearence problems but if it is sbc mounts it might through off your angle on the engine. The engine will put a strain on the trans and drive shaft. So far look's good.
