On the 55 Customline, I have an open drive rear end, did they come with a close rear end. How do I determin what rear end I have. The markings on the 3rd member are (5-10, C with 1 underline, a triangle shape with an (-I-) The (-) = dots on each side of the I, and a tag with 3.89 stamped on it).

It is the stock rear for the '55, the 3.89 was common in cars with a 6 cyl and 3 speed transmission,it was also in some V8 cars with overdrive. It is similar in some ways to the later Ford 8" but parts do not interchange.Actually a good ratio if you go to a 302 & AOD later, you can hook up to the stock rear with a 1986 Crown Vic driveshaft and a conversion rear u-joint pm me for a part number when you get ready to swap.

The last torque tube in the US was 1948 The 3.89 ratio is a very good rear to have.

That rear end will do well. Unless you're an animal, it'll go forever. Ya might wanna do a basic rebuild with bearings and seals, but if it's not leaking from the pinion, and it's quiet, maybe just change the fluid and leave it alone
