55 DeSoto U-joint question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mr57, Mar 15, 2011.

  1. Friend of mine's father is putting an old Fireflite back on the road and apparently the rear U-joint is missing. According to his info this thing is some sort of unobtainium and the one place he did find one was going to gouge him close to $180 for it, plus shipping, customs and duties. It would be close to $300 by the time he got it here to Canada. Question is, does anyone know of another that fits. Apparently it has two size cups and different width as well. He doesn't have the original to take in to see if there is an adapter style one that fits. Any help?

That is a old "DETROIT" brand/style ujoint, hard to find for years.I have a old "Republic" ujoint catalog and can give you the numbers it shows ,very few ujiont makers made those even back in the day. Republic #CB72625-2 ;Borg, 114-261; Chrysler,947550 ;Neapco,285700 or 285700G ;Precision,300 ;Wesco,D261 or D526. Some of these companys have been out of biz for years. I show the bare cross demension. to be 2.875 and 2 round caps 1&5/64s and the other 2 caps to have ears/wings with a 1.750 C/C bolt hole mesaurement. Hope this info will be of help ,he may be stuck for the high rent one.
