Just like the ***le says I guess. Im new here and know this is a double post/ two threads, but did not find this area immediately so now I am asking here where I believe it to be the correct sub forum. I have a 55 fairlane 2dr club sedan 272 3spd manual. I would like to swap to a 302 with a toploader and maintain column shift if possible. Can this trans be used? I have seen references to c4 and c6 but not to a toploader. Thanks all and sorry if this is posted elsewhere.
I know that toploader 4 speed and T5 5 speed have been used so I see no reason why your combination wouldn't work, the 3 speed linkage will take a little figuring but I'm sure it can be done.
I have a 3speed toploader bolted up to my y block in a right hand drive Oz Mainline. A great conversion. I am also using the column shift. The way I did this was to cut the originall selector rods and the rods from the gearbox crossover and welded them together. Obviously the linkages were on the wrong side for the toploader so the crossover linkage was necessary and the linnkages fitted into this setup with nylon bushes. you may find youroriginal linkage selector rods will fit right up to your top loader with very minor adjustment. The hard part of the exercise is modifying or getting a tailshaft to fit. Make sure you get the original yoke for your gearbox, if not the complete tailshaft which you can have modified to fit. It will end up being about 6-7" longer than your original yblock shaft. You may also find that the earbox will bolt up to the original rear crossmember with a bit of slotting the holes.
