1952-59 Ford 55 fairlane to AOD Speedometer cable

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by Rockabillykat666, May 10, 2011.

  1. So i need another speedometer cable to go from the speedo to an AOD transmission. I had a lokar cable that melted due to improper installation on my part a few years ago and i bought a cheap one from advance auto and i cannot remember which year or model ford it was from and now i cant find it. i'd rather not buy another Lokar cable so can anyone give me a part # for a cheapy cable that'll work? i think the speedo end is 5/8" thread. if i remember correctly the one i found at advance was for a car with cruise control. what difference does this make between cables?

    johnny ,
I would just measure the cable and get a universal one and cut to fit . That should work .
Sounds like you are going to be driving the 55 Fairlane to the show Sat now .

my aod is out of like a 88 crown vic and i just used that. it threadded right in. i think most fords are the same cause i just put a 390\c6 in our 55 fairlane and the c6 cable from the truck it came out of threaded right in to. just got to junk yard and grab one. them play with the gear to get it to read right.

  4. jim- i already bought one of those lokar cables..it ran me $60 and like i said i didnt clamp it properly and it melted on the exhaust. so i'm really counting my pennies here.

Dan- when i do a search on 88 crown vic it gives me the push on type not the screw on type to the speedometer housing like i need. i already have the 19 tooth gear end that i need

Tell the counter "dummy" you have a 1969 Mustang 302 with a C4 it has the correct ends.

  6. hey jeff, the advance auto website shows 2 cables for the 69 mustang
and they both do not appear to be correct.

Jeff will that cable work for the C6 too? Is 19 teeth the standard for the C6 to 54 speedo?

It should work with the C6 also,if you have changed rear ends or tire sizes the 19 tooth gear may have to be changed out to correct the speedometer reading.www.transmissioncenter.net has a link you can click on in the AOD transmission section so you can determine the correct gear they also sell the gears.

I know this is an old post, but i did ask at one time what cable i need. Never really got a great exact answer. I have a 54 stock speedo, and an aod out of a 86 thunderbird. Anyone know which cable i need? or which car to search for that has the cable i need? thanks guys!!

I am in So Ca and went to Gails speedo in Costa Mesa, showed him both ends and he made it for me. Don't remember how much but totally affordable. Check for a local shop..

Earlier Jeff said a 68 Mustang with 302 and C4 was the correct one.
