Yep, you read it right. A 1956 Imperal Convertible. And your correct, Chrysler didn't mass-produce Imperial Convertibles that year. They only made three of them. On May 19, the one-of-three 1956 Imperial convertible hiding in the woods just a few miles away from the Old Cars Weekly office was removed from its 30-year resting place on the side of a tree-filled hill. My homeboy Adam sent me some pics of that car. I guess he is going to be restoring it. He says that it also came STOCK with a 392 Hemi, a motor that wasn't readily available until 1957 as I am told.....
Only on the HAMB would you find a responce like that. Didn't say I disagreed , it just caught me off guard.
I read up on that. Body shell is New Yorker with Imperial nose, deck, etc. Back then, if they didn't make it, but could put it together out of existing parts, and you threw enough money at them - they'd build it for you.
Some of the '56's also came stock with the 3 speed TorqueFlite trans instead of the 2 speed PowerFlite. The engineers were in charge back then - they could do stuff like that - along with the fact there weren't the regulations associated with powertrain changes which exist today.
A long time member in my Dad's Imperial club has one of the other ones... Trying to track down a picture...crazy to find one in a field!
