First things first, this engine to my knowledge is very much stock except for a rochester 2 barrel carb.

I got this thing running after years in a barn and many crappy fixes over the years. At first it really wouldnt run at all which ended up being the little plate below the intake blew out. So I fixed that, made a new super thick aluminum plate and bolted it up new intake gaskets. Set the timing to about 6btc (factory manual says 5 with the advance unhooked).

So, it doesnt run as smoothly as Id think sorta chugs, and it bogs way down when you put it in drive, but the throttle response is right up there and doesnt bog when you tap the gas. I cant find any vacuum leaks so Im sort of at a loss. Im wondering if thats just how these things run....

    What its in:

I'd start with a compression test, then I'd tune it and clean the entire fuel system from tank to carb kit, replacing only parts that need to be changed.

I started a compression test last night and got 120 on both front cylinders before I got tired and went to bed. And thats whats getting me. I rebuilt the carburetor, and the fuel pump, blew out the hardline that goes front to rear AND put in a new tank! ha, hence why Im so surprised that Im having this much trouble.

Ill add this though, I started it up this morning (wasnt the easiest thing, took a couple tries) and once it warmed up for about 30 seconds it ran great!! I drove it over to my house from the shop and putting it in gear/stopping while in gear pulled the rpm down but nothing like its been doing..... garage gremlins?
