Just joined, still finding my way around , but glad to be here. Building a 1956 Ford 4dr wagon for long distance cruzing. Ready to lift off frame, would like to buy a rotisserie. Trouble is, my garage has an entry height of only 68 inches. It opens up inside to 77 inches in height. And its a one car garage. After calling several manufacturers, no one could tell me if I could roll the wagon in and out of garage, because of 68 inch height, with body on rotisserie at its lowest level. I believe, I could spin it once inside, I only need to tilt it enough to get to the bottom of floorpans, for cleanup. Already replaced rotted rear floor pan. Wondering if anyone else has encountered such low overhead with their rotisserie, would like to hear about it and your solution. Is there a math formula I could use to figure if a rotisserie will work in this situation? I have all body dimensions, and not above SAFELY modifying a rotisserie to make it work. I plan to have Ted Eaton build the 312 motor but I will be installing a 4R70W trans with Baumann controller myself, so I need to be frame off. Saw some wooden "tilt up" homemade systems that would be last resort for floor pan cleanup. Kinda scary as I work alone. Will rent a forklift to remove body, set on cart or rotisserie, move to a storage facility while I do frame work, then reverse. Any experiences or ideas?
I just jack my stuff up and lay on my back. Sounds like that is where you are at. pick it up shore it up and get down and dirty. Or rent a shop.
Option one: Put car on rotisserie and then flip upside-down. Should be less high when it is roof down. Option two. Will removing garage door give you more entry height.
getting down and dirty as porkn****** says would do for cleaning up the bottom but still need to be frame off to do ****** swap and I am going to paint frame, install double master cyl, etc, all a lot easier if body off. Garage doors are not overhead doors(not enough height for them) they are two swing open doors. Already widened each side one foot so I could make swing into garage. Entry height caused by beam for porch above, cant change. House above garage. If I KNEW there was clearance to mount on rotisserie upside down and roll in and out, that would work, but no manufacturer I called was willing to guarantee it would do so. Cant spend that much and then not work. Plan on renting forklift to remove body outside. May have to do the down and dirty to take care of floor cleanup, then put on body cart and bring to storage facility while I do my frame work. Thanks for your input ,guys.
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do,I just jack the body up and pulled the frame out from under the body. HRP
Thought I would try uploading a few pictures of my build and show my workspace. Golden lines on new floorpan are from my worklight, not paint stripes. Painted all the white around windows so I could install all new windows and related weatherstrip.etc. Bottom will be brilliant yellow with cragar chrome mags, eventually.
First of all, Welcome to the HAMB! The 1956 Ford is one good looking car, hope you start a build thread will lots of photos, HAMB people love photos. Find the Modified Murray build, Scooter made his own rotisserie using two hoops, it sounds it may be something that you could use with your garage height problems. Bob .............................I'll go find it and post a link.
Yes, the ceiling is so low I could'nt paint the roof. Hardest part of this build is working in this closet. I'll take a look at that hoop system. Putting the wagon on jackstands to work underneath still doesnt give me much working height before it hits the ceiling. Will be rebuilding all the doors while I sort this out. Was going through past archives and saw a post where someone was putting a 4R70w behind a yblock, but it was a 6 yr old post. Anyone done one more recently? I know a Bendtsen AOD adapter will work here too, but will I have to enlarge the trans tunnel? Holding off on front pan replace until I get to that point. Appreciate y'alls input and the welcome. Taking lots of pics along the way. Roadster in a ba*****t, way cool.
Measure from the center of the car on a diagonal to the farthest point on the roof. I'm sure it ain't gonna fit. I think you will have to do what Danny did. Welcome and good luck
Here ya go, one of my Top Ten favorite HAMB Build Threads. Bob http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...to-the-road-progress-in-review.437990/page-11
Thanks to everyone for all the ideas, but I think I will be using an adjustable body cart, I can lower to exit the garage and raise it once inside. Same idea as a jackstand works. If I use smaller casters as on rotisseries and can switch to larger tires once outside., body and cart could be transported to storage. The PODS storage system may be a better way to go yet. Have to check that out. Final Answer: The money spent for a good rotisserie, would be about half the cost to rebuild my 312, so I'd rather lay on my back and work my **** off, and get my motor running sooner. May have to make/adapt this body cart, let you know and post pics if/when it happens.
Doing a body off on my 2 door but we have access to a lift, not a rotisserie. We'll be working underneath the body doing clean up, welding and paint.
greetings group; Spent some enjoyable time looking at many members build threads. We have some pretty talented, creative, folks on board. Great pics of the work being done. I've found a solution to my "no fit rotisserie" situation that may be helpful to others so I thought I would post this info. I found that Home Depot sells a combination 3 ton jackstand/ bottle jack COMBINATION. (only sold online) for $51.39 each. It has a lift range of 11 to 21 inches. It is model #640912 if you want to go to Home Depot online and check it out. I plan to buy 4 and add 5" casters I already have for mobility . Welding up an adjustable length/width square tube frame will tie them together. Total height of this ***embly should be about 18 " before lift range of another 11 to 21 inches. Each unit rated at 6000lbs. Since I cant spin, I gotta get under. This seems to be my only solution, maybe it will make life easier for some others. This little project wont happen until hurricane season is over (Oct) so now I am redoing all 4 doors. One rear door has bodywork done, working on rebuilding division bar and interior door workings. Where did that rivet clincher go?
