57 Chevy generator question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hubnut, May 19, 2008.

  1. I need to know if an early Corvette tach drive unit will bolt to the back of a passenger car generator that originally had power steering? I dont have the tach drive yet, so taking it out and trying to bolt it up isnt an option. The guy trying to sell me the generator says it will, but of course he IS trying to sell me something too.....Ive looked at the metal gear for the tach drive unit and it IS splined inside, Im assuming to fit over the splined end of the armature that originally went into the power steering pump. Anyone know for SURE before I spend the cash? Gnerator came off a 57 Chevy with factory power steering.

Yes, both power steering and tach drives used the same spline.

You can get that generator rebuilt with seal bearings also, makes it nice not to oil all the time.

I am doing the same thing i.e. changing a 57 chevy power steering generator into a tach drive generator for my 61 vette. Did you complete this project or run into any snags?
    Thanks
