I've got a '57 chevy wagon with an hei 350 that turns over when the key is turned to the start position but won't actually fire and run until the key is returned to the run position. I am wiring impaired (i don't know $hit about ignition wiring, seriously) and haven't actually looked at it yet. I was hoping someone might have a few suggestions as to the possible problem before I try. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
are you using points? do you have that bypass wire going from the R terminal of the starter solenoid to the + side of the coil?
That's usually it. Or the ignition is hooked up to the accessory side of the switch which has no power during cranking.
or if you have hei ignition then you need a power wire from the coil to a switched terminal on the fuse box (use a test light and look for a terminal that is only hot when the ignition is on.)
Thanks for the replies. As stated, its hei, not points. I think Jonz might be on to the problem. I really appreciate it. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
stock 57 ignition switches do not have a terminal that is hot during stating, that's why you use the "r" terminal on the starter. if you have a later motor I have used and earlier solenoid for the fix
Run a "resistor bypass wire from the I terminal on the starter up to the wire running to the HEI and that will make work. If the solenoid doesn't have the I post on it, run a wire from a hot all the time connection on the fuse block or a hot when the key is on connection and put a push button under the dash with a wire running to the ign wire to the HEI to give the HEI 12V when you pus the button while cranking the engine. Either way works. I used to run into the same situation on cars guys forgot to hook up the resistor bypass wire on when they swapped engines back before we had HEI distributors. The car would start after they let off the key if they hit it right but wouldn't fire when cranking as the switch is set up to use the bypass wire.
