Could anyone tell me what the torque spec. is for the pinion nut on a 1957 Chevy car rearend? It seems like if I tighten it up to much it wants to bind a little when I try to spin it.
Most pinion nuts don't have a torque spec, instead they have a rotational spec. This is what sets the preload on the pinion bearing. Generally, you tighten the nut until it takes 20-25 in/lbs of torque to rotate it. You will have to use a beam type torque wrench to measure this.
I think to do it rite now that you have overtightened it you need to replace the crush slieve get someone to help you or you will burn it up&need a tow truck .....
Burn what up, the pinion? Would there be to much end play in the pinion if the nut was tightened to much and then backed off?
