Could anyone tell me what the torque spec. is for the pinion nut on a 1957 Chevy car rearend? It seems like if I tighten it up to much it wants to bind a little when I try to spin it.

Most pinion nuts don't have a torque spec, instead they have a rotational spec. This is what sets the preload on the pinion bearing.
Generally, you tighten the nut until it takes 20-25 in/lbs of torque to rotate it. You will have to use a beam type torque wrench to measure this.

Burn what up, the pinion? Would there be to much end play in the pinion if the nut was tightened to much and then backed off?
