Well,.... since my Black 57 is in Bodyshop Jail and no parole in sight... I decided to start the second one.(ooooffff!)
Some of you may remember the kinda long thread(and when that car is back...I will continue on that thread.)

    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/my-57-is-home.818109/

Anyhow..... Work has begun on the Texas 57 300......
After staring at it for years..... and really thinking about the final end result.... I have come to the conclusion of leaving the body and paint as is...... not because of any love of the long since dead Patina craze..... simply... I just don't have the funds(nor do I want to pay for it)... to paint the car...... I feel something would be lost forever.
As for now, its just gonna be a local beater.....
FE Powered,4 speed and a factory feel.....
As much as I love Gassers, drag cars, exotic drivetrains.... I have found myself moving towards simplicity rather than complication.

This was the state I dragged the car home from Wellington TX.

I removed all the components that were in my way.. and started to do a rebuild on the front end.....
I am very lucky to live near a pal who specializes in vintage parts.. and he had everything I needed for a complete overhaul on the front end...(bushings, ball joints,Idler arm rebuild kits, etc,etc....
Shay from pre-sixties has all the good stuff. and a massive inventory of great NOS and NORS items for nearly every brand....

    Great guy,.. check him out.

I should mention..Last summer I did pull the rear out and rebuilt the 9, new bearings, seals, brakes and a new 3rd member ... 3:50 post unit..... new brakes. IMG_8517.jpg IMG_8510.jpeg
....As well as new Eaton 6 pack springs, shocks, spring pads, etc etc.... pretty excited I just received my traction masters to be added as the job progresses.
(they took a very long time to get due to the current situation of the lockdowns and such.)
Spent some long days grinding and scratching the underside from the B-pillar back and coated all with a garden variety of rust inhibitors and POR-15 chassis coat.
    but that's all done.

After removing the front clip..... I began on prep and of the front end stuff.... again... pretty dirty job.
Had a friend press in all the upper and lower A Arm bushings at his shop...
... just a visual of the journey so far.....

  6. Off to a good start. I took my '59 down to a bare chassis too, painted everything before putting it back together.

Next step is to tackle the floors...I have all the EMS sheetmetal and I should be starting that part this weekend,.....
The rear pans and drivers front pan is the only real bad spot.... thank god for Southern cars.
In hind site.... The other 57 was in much worse shape.....

    .....to be continued.

  9. Always nice to have a car you can lock the door and walk away . I like not having to worry if kids or adults lean or play around my freshly painted car . Old Original paint paint all the way ..

I remember back in the day when tires came wrapped in paper. They were a real PITA to get to bead up, even with a cinch band. IMG_8514.jpeg

  11. Hey Jeff do you have the clutch pedals and stuff for the four speed?

I like the plan. And this car will wear it's old paint pretty well, at least the paint on this car is uniform and intact. The paint on my '57 Chevy is probably the least attractive old paint imaginable, but painting it would have kinda defeated the point of the car, which was to be a daily use, back-and-forth-to-work type of thing, without becoming a "might as well..." buildup.

As a lifelong Wisconsin resident, it's always shocking to me to see A-arms and framerails and stuff like that so smooth and clean, and not looking like a topographical map of the moon. Someday when I grow up I want to be wise and find a southern project.

  14. Something about the way that car looks says moonshine runner to me. I like it a lot!

  15. If you aren't in a rush, take them out of the packaging, put a tube in each tire (no wheel) and pump them up. Leave them with the tube in them until you are ready to install on wheel.

  17. Cool, I have a ‘58 Meteor with a y block and three on the tree with all of the clutch stuff intact, not sure if it’s the same as a ‘57 or not, but I have it if you need anything.

Similar to my Ranchero- it was a running hotrod that was taken apart for paint and stillborn. 390/4spd, tilt column, front discs etc. Think I need to sell it, just have too many

  27. So, if you're not doing any cosmetics you should go full-on sleeper! 14x7/14x8 steel wheels/blackwalls with a set of OEM 'OK shape' wheel covers would be perfection!! Ghost of Thunder Road!!!
