Hot Rods 57 FORD Build #2... Glutton for Punishment.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jeff Norwell, Oct 20, 2021.

  1. I will never understand why people always want to part out 4 doors, even the one I have, the original owner said many people wanted to part it out, its one of the reasons he sold it to me instead of others who offered, because I wanted to put it back on the road and not just part it.

That's what I was wondering too. If that car were in Wisconsin people would be all ga-ga for it since it's not a bag of rot.

In the end it seems like all of the parts were used and the rest got built into something, so no real harm done, but would have been a terrible shame if it did get scrapped.

  3. Its kinda weird to think, these cars were supposed to last maybe 5 years, at most, and here they are, 65 years later.

Cmon… you all can surmise until the cows come home…
I saw that car, inspected it and took what I needed.
floors were completely gone… interior was destroyed, the 272 was Seized… the Ford-o-matic was not only toasted… they were a horrible transmission… the front end was deteriorated beyond fixing as the front crossmember was Swiss cheese.
    It was J U N K .
Be happy it made a second life as a race car… and 7 people saved their cars.

  6. Not all cars can be saved. Great that parts went into other projects and the car lives on the track, looking real sharp.

I gotta give em credit. There are a lot of diehard gearheads here that would cross the amazon in a Hippo paddelboat to save a rotted out hood off an opel kadett.:D

  9. Where did your used parts come from? Ultimately the real answer in fact is $$$$ when you get right down to it. Afterall that's what drives everything. Let's get back to building something.

    Anyhow...... moving forward.....

My final parts arrived...... finally. my Robbmc starter arrived,. I needed this as the solenoid can rotate 360 degrees... fit like a charm,
also received my fuel canister and mount.... mocked it up... and I will continue with the 3/8's line...
Plan to go and get my driveshaft cut and spun up with an accurate measurement of 57-5/8's...
and starting to assembly the throttle linkage.

    Keep pushing forward....

  12. The shine on those valve covers looks fantastic! Did that come from spray bombs? If so, what's your secret?

In Canada it is quite common to use the Lint-Free roller.

  20. Is that a Holley fuel canister? I have a couple of them myself. They take the same element as the old Ford fuel pumps. I forget the number right now.

  21. What's the reasoning behind using a hydraulic clutch in this application? Reason I ask is I am assuming the factory stick cars had rods and a Z-bar (or something similar).

When I changed a slightly off-topic car from auto to stick, I bought a used factory pedal assembly and modified a Z-bar I had laying around from another application. Worked great.

Were most 57 Fords auto with factory stick pedals being extremely hard to find? Is it for exhaust/engine clearance? It shouldn't be for steering box clearance if factory parts are used. All this talk of brackets and bracing makes me wonder why the factory stuff (or what I assume factory stuff to be) couldn't be used or modified to work just fine leaving me wondering why the bother to switch to hydraulic.

The only real reason for using the Hydraulic throw out bearing was... it was free.
On the other 57 Build, I used a complete stock Z-bar set up with slight mods to use with the 428 and 4 speed. No,.. they are not rare..... I just did not have them at the time I needed them for this build.
I have used Hydraulic throw out bearings on other builds and have no issues with them.(some people detest them)
I don't,.... they just need to be set up properly.
In short,. I used what I had at hand.
As time has past... and now I have collected all factory stuff.... If I get in a fix.. I have it to fall back on.

@bobss396 .... The fuel canister and bracket is from a 1960 Ford unit..... and was used on 390/406/427 cars....
I did not know Holley made one.. interesting.

  27. I am pretty sure the holley fuel canisters have 1/4 male fitting attached to the canister to slide 1/4 inch rubber hose over .
Picked up a proper tri power / dual four chrome canister with a new filter at ancaster a few weeks ago , I'll break your heart Jeff 20.00

  30. I have 2 of them, I'll have to dig one out and shoot a picture of it. They are red with a Holley label on at least one of them. I used them on my stock cars and they take a 3/8" line. I haven't seen one new one for sale in decades.
