I didn't word the question well. :) You being an artist, do you paint some hot rod art or pinstripe the dash on your hot rods when you have completed them?

  3. I did my bumper brackets too. Here is a couple of shots from when I did the sway bar 5 years ago.

So.. just after a year of thrashing on this.. its come along way.. but I would say I am at the 50% mark.....
of course daydreaming.. I thought it would be done by now.
    Keep moving forward......
I need to finish the wiring... all glass, complete interior and exhaust... at my pace,I am praying for a spring drive.

Regardless of whether you do or don't paint the car it will be one of my favorite '57 Fords. Partly due to the actual physical properties of the car but more because of the personality you've infused into it. I've followed this thread since day one. Kudos to you on your build. I'd love to see it in person but I don't think that's ever going to happen (geographics ya know). fwiw I think that 1957 was Ford's best year of the decade.

  8. Jeff, I for one like the patina. I wouldn't paint that thing on a bet!

    @atch
Ya never know Mike..... one of my desires is to take it back to the Panhandle for an ultimate road trip adventure ..... and of course. ....I need to pass through Missouri.
My dream would to be Criss Cross the US and Canada on a 3 month road trip.... Bob K is yelling in my ear.
    Ya just never Know.

Please come through Columbia. Like Tom Bodett said" we'll leave the light on for you."

We all miss Bob's travel adventure stories and Denise doesn't post here anymore. Roger (@40StudeDude) hasn't posted any travel stories lately that I know of. Maybe you can become the newest hamb travel storyteller.

    Looking at this thread......
    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/when-build-threads-go-cold-what-not-to-do.1246824/

Well, the OP is correct. so I apologize up front.....
Nope...... the project is very much alive..... not dead......
    Life just gets busy.....
This project started early October of last year.... still going.... just a slow down of sorts.. but still moving.... just not any exciting stuff.
but here is where its at.......
still wiring(takes me a long time)
need some small welding on the rear tail-pan/trunk floor area.
finishing up the fuel system.... bending 3/8 lines can be a real PIA.
Found a Ford hi-po air-cleaner (free is good)
Changed over to a 59 hood latch..... such a better unit than a 57-58. the hood locks and shuts with 1 finger... instead of a slam!

    Yea.... we be rocking.

After Thanksgiving I shall hit the gas again.

  18. That air cleaner has to be about as rare of a Ford part as there is. Your car has become something of a "community" car and that's not a bad thing. :)

Oh yea....... there was on other accomplishment that was achieved ....... since I am using a 60-61 ford electric wiper(yes. they fit)... the wiper cable switch was frozen..... I tried for 3 weeks to get it freed up.. dipped in oil for 2 weeks.. nope... WD-40 and Fluid Film coatings..... nope..... a muriatic acid dip..... nope

The very small cable runs through a coiled sheath.... and the end(about 4 inches at the end) was seized....(rust)..... I mentioned it to my buddy Terry .... a Ford Tech.... and that guy after an hour had it working.
I love that guy..... I hate that guy.

    ha ha

I just wasn't gonna spend $150 bucks on a cable switch.... so..... it works....
you need to be super delicate with these cables..... the little disk at the end needs to stay on the thin wire..... if you break it...... the unit is useless.

    anyhow.... yea.. happy ending.

    100% in agreement.

  21. that is a beautiful fuel line and filter setup!

i noticed how the FE and the Y block seem to be quite similar in some aspects and very different in others. such as the small hose connecting the water pump and intake. by the way, for an FE swap do you need a ground strap from the engine to the firewall, or is that just a Y block thing?

Five weeks on a cable? I would have blown a fuse at two days! As always, great job and can't wait for the completion.

The FE was the next step after the Y-Block... both share some same characteristics ..... and yes.. I grounded the engine in 3 different areas.... the engine to the frame, the engine to the lower firewall and a ground from the engine to the battery as well.

I was looking at this thread a couple of days ago and almost responded asking about progress. I didn't 'cause I didn't want to be a pest. However, now that it's reactivated I'll chime in. Thanx for the update.

I bent up 3/8" fuel line on the 283 in Clarence about 30 years ago (I know; who needs a 3/8" line on a stock 283???).
    1. I was 30 years younger then
    2. I had 30 years more patience then
    3. I had more arm/hand strength then.

You did good on the fuel line; it looks great.

Yes @atch ... patience is a virtue...... and I went through about 4 tries on that 3/8's line... yes,I know there are really fancy tube benders out there.... but I used a small Hemi crank pulley and an alternator pulley to make my bends....
the groove in each pulley works easily.... bending the smaller lines... is quite easy.... the big stuff..... not so much.
    Thanks Mike.

Jeff , the lines came out great! It never crossed my mind to use different size pulleys for bending lines, but that just makes perfect sense! Next time I´ll need to bend hardlines I hope I can remember your pulley trick... probably not:D

Isn't that air cleaner lid the same as what the single 4 barrel '57 Thunderbird used? They were being reproduced in chrome back when I worked at a T-bird only restoration shop. I could be wrong but it really looks similar.

Glad to see more updates on the car. As long as it keeps moving forward, eventually it'll be done.
