Hot Rods 57 FORD Build #2... Glutton for Punishment.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jeff Norwell, Oct 20, 2021.

  1. Don't get much better than that does it? But about that Radiator, just exactly where did that come from? I like the top tank even if I don't recognize it as 57 (maybe 59?) but overall, it looks correct. I'm in need of one and refuse to do the mail order make it fit program. I thought I had a good core but I didn't check it out close enough. Top tank has a couple small cracks from overheating it seems. Finding a replacement "STOCK" looking one is more difficult than I expected. Yah, I'm gearing up to roll that Black project into the work stall and see what a few months of work can yield before winter hits again. Can you steer me in a good direction?

Looking good, is that a Hi-Po Mustang air cleaner?

I thought they’d got a few more “ripples”? Wonder why Ford did so many different air cleaner tops!!

Looks real good, "trashcan" fuel filter is a nice touch (at least, that's what we used to call them when I worked at a T-bird restoration shop).

The AC is just a 57 Bird Cover... the Unicorn 60 AC is hard to find.......
@Pist-n-Broke .. Yes.its a OG 57 rad.... the upper and lower tanks were Gennie and I had it re-cored years ago...I prefer OG Ford copper and Brass than aluminum.

    Hopefully today we Fire.

She's just fine, a little rough around the edges...... nasty Bitchin' ! :)

  9. Exactly what I was doing when I was told the tanks were spent. Looks aren't everything but they are important. Good luck running in the motor for the first time.

Clutch feel is spot on.. no issues whatsoever.... engagement is great too.... no shudder. just a fine smooth engagement and release.
all wiring is good and functioning , but I did have a dud volt gauge... I have a spare.. so easy fix.

  16. You're pretty good with these startup videos but I'm still waiting for the drive/burnout videos. :)

Well finished up the exhaust. with help of the good friend Terry.. the FE has a nice purr to it....
Moving forward with the interior and glass...

So I pulled the front bumper.... just finishing up some tow hooks like a Thunderbolt....
Very happy with the engine performance and idle tone. Reminds me of being 17..again.This FE is Raunchy.I think it should pull exceptionally well.
I have mentioned this,....but idle warm is about 700-750... oil pressure cold is 60, then 45-50 warm.Exhaust is 2.25 with good ole Cherry Bombs.... I chose to do the exhaust myself.. as the cost to get my pals shop to do it was getting expensive.I wanted to run it out the back.. but the early Nascar before the rear wheels is just fine.Who knows, I may do a full system one day.
Saving my pennies for a new set of Bias Ply Boots..... I would love to get a set of Towel City Slicks as an Option.. so. thats for the future.
I have a flunky volts gauge which I shall replace.
Pulling the exhaust now to paint all with a hi-temp manifold grey.
As mentioned.. moving into the interior.. finish the door and quarter window glass with repaired channels and glass runs.I have an old back seat and some black carpet I will run....

The finish line is in sight....

You’ll be going for a drive before me at this rate. Gotta spend another 60 mins on this train before I can turn the volume up on the vid

I love it, sounds wicked, I’m not a huge patina guy , probably because it’s been overdone, however your car has perfect patina I really really like it.

  26. Sounding and looking great Jeff!

I think this falls into the perfect 'well worn' category... Agreed with you, patina feels overdone because a lot of guys are faking it.

    Thank you Speedy!

I have mentioned this before..... Paint is just not an option at this point.
I am not a Fake Patina guy.. its just the way the car is... a natural Mother Nature progression.
There are a ton of imperfections on the body.. and in time I will address them.... but its more important for me to actually drive the car and use it.
Already have a Painted flawless 57,.. and its a Tuxedo car..... this 57 is a rolling Laboratory... or that's how I view it.
The way it is ,... is just that. And they are only old once.
Maybe one day I will paint it.. but not at this point. That decision was made a long time ago.. rather to focus on bringing back to life.

Anyways..I have my Tow Hooks installed and made up a clutch Pedal stop.... using (what else) Early Ford parts.A simple Clevis and a foot bump rest.
Tested the car and it rolls very nice, shifted into 1st, and shifts into reverse super smooth.Clutch has a smooth great feeling.
    Progressing forward.

Killer results and a great thread. It's been fun following along.

Clutch pedal stop is so that you don't overthrow the clutch?
