There was an economic RECESSION that year, or so I've been led to believe.
Some people said is would have been as bad as the 30's depression if it wasn't for the federal bank insurance covering our financial asses.
Anyway '58 Ford and other sales suffered and the up$cale Edsel fit few budgets, because of the economy, not the car. The '58 Edsel, compared to most of the other '58 car models was beautiful.

1957 Ford passenger production; 1,674,448 vehicles. The '57 had a 13 month run.

    1958 Ford passenger production; 987,945

    1959 Ford passenger production; 1,462,180

That is partly an answer but it may be that the '58 was considered very ugly until quite recently. '57 collectors used '58s as parts cars.

Less made plus never gained the popularity of the -57. I don't think the -58's looks as bad as many people think, can be made to look great with minor mods! 59 on the other hand I cant understand, 10 years or so ago I landed a 59 Custom 300 2 door post cause it was cheap... I did the best I could of it, lowered it with a nose down stance, had a old Hurst shifter lying around & put it to use on the 3 speed. Put some glasspacks on it ( Y-blocks sound very nice!), made a "cheapo" white t&r interior.

I've never liked those cars before, but when I had it I actually did... A friend did to & made me an offer I could'nt resist. But I am totally cured from the 59 Ford thing, now they look as awkward as they used to again... But I would like a 57 or 58 though...

I agree 57 and 58 posts look lean and mean. I've also got to agree with the 59 Buick post. The base models just look better to me. Although they're newer, I'm also partial to the 65 Ford Custom 500 2 door post.

I love them also and just a quick point, on the short wheelbase 57's, the fins ARE actually smaller, no optical illusion about it. Take the taillight surround off of a custom, place it up against its longer wheelbase fairlane cousin. The fin is almost 2 full inches higher on the fairlane.
(try and find one of those tailight housings for a custom yeesh! Ended up paying way too much for one on ebay.)

I had a custom post car, bone stock 292 with a fordomatic, that thing would actually chirp the tires into second!!!

Fun car...wish I hadn't sold it, but I sold it to fund a 56 chev sedan delivery...

I've got a hardtop, but I love both body styles. I'd be just as happy with a sedan. It was just what I found at the time.
As far as 58's go I think that Fidgets car is perfection. The stance is right on!

I miss mine somethin' awful. It's that low post roof. The rest of the '57 Ford styling is just beautiful, hardtop, wagon, ranchero whatever...I just wish Ford would have rust proofed them better. I've never seen one that wasn't rotted out, including mine.
