57 ford steering box interchange

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 57countrysedan, May 27, 2014.

  1. I like Big motors and performance. Ford's 460 makes a good truck motor. In fact I have one in my Truck. Any Car Guy knows if your tires are Smokin your not hooked up. There is a reason there half the price of a good small block.

Haha it hooks as good as a car with street tires and stock suspension will. I'm talking about power braking anyway. Thank u for ur help on my original question but i am not going to get into a ******* match about how wrong i am for putting a 460 in my wagon. It works for me if u dont agree then okay. Like i said thanks for your help if u want start a new thread about my engine choice and we can chat about it there.

460s are great motors if you get rid of the early 70s and newer timing gears, got one in my 66 f250 that will light up the tires very easily. The only thing I do not like about that motor is a overdrive trans can not be put behind one cheap,Ford finally got around to putting one behind them when the computer controlled the trans too.

One good thing about a big engine is that you don't really need overdrive with it...just run a mild rearend gear.

My f250 is going to get converted to a 1/2 ton this summer and will be getting 2.75 or 3.00 gears, the 460 has enough torque that it should handle the tall gears and I hope I can get the gas mileage closer to 18 with those gears. It gets 13 now with 3.54 gears.

Wow thats pretty good! I stuck 4.10s in with some 235/75/15 tires so has mileage is around ten. Sometimes 11 if i stay out of the throttle. Sometimes i wish i had better hears for highway but then i chase after a mustang and i feel better lol. Even then with the 4.10s driving like a normal person the rpm isnt to bad.

I am hoping for around 16 when I finish the 1/2 ton conversion.I am going to start out with the 2.75 gears first and not going to go past 3.00. Back in the mid 80s I had a 78 f150 with a 351-M that had a RV cam and 2.75 gears which would get around 18 on the highway, the 460 has way more torque so it should do about the same if I keep the RPMs down. The quality of the gas was better back then so it might not get any better mileage but I am going to try.

Good luck...I've found over many years that big blocks in trucks get ****py mileage, no matter what. 14 would be pretty good out of a 460 in a truck. I got that in one of my trucks years ago, with a mild 454. My suburban did a little better with it's little 350, and 2.75 gears.

..after you pull the column off the steering box, you can slip a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe over the greasy steering shaft. Makes handling it a much more pleasant!

The 59 box was a bit larger, mostly where the steering shaft comes out (it was about 3-4 ins. longer than the 57). Only problem I had was the pitman arm & the steering wheel had different splines. Nothing a 59 pitman arm & a little grinding wouldn't fix. You might check over on 57fordsforever.com for more info. A few of those guys have installed 460's in their cars.

Old ones out old new one is in. Car drives like it should! Think this is what was wrong with the old one? ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1403554662.885319.jpg think that is the weak part of the 57 boxes. Even the replacement had a lil nik in the same gear. Thanks again for all your help guys

I mean the 59 and newer models, not the replacement from a 57.
