if it were me id run the c4 but ive never done this so ill let someone with more knowledge answer the tech part
Hi, welcome. The C4 and C6 are not overdrive transmissions. The AOD is, but it won't bolt up to a Y block engine like you have. The C4 or C6 won't either.
There are kits thatwill mate a GM transmission-th350, 400, 700r4 to a y block. I don't know about the ford trannys. found this with a quick search http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135149
An adapter kit to run the AOD would set you back about $850 plus the cost of the AOD and a few more parts like the TV cable and bracket all total you would be knocking on $2K.Scroll down to see the kit:http://www.transmissioncenter.com/A...sions_and_AOD_Performance_Parts_from_PATC.htm You would be better off by changing the rear gears to a ratio around 3.00 and since you have a '57 you will have a 9" that should set you back under $300.The other option is selling the Y-Block and putting a complete AOD and 5.0(aka 302) in your '57 and you should be able to find a good donor for around $1K for both, not quite as HAMB friendly but it is an EZ swap.
