own it yet and haven't driven it in 20 years but the day is coming. Still has
    1957 air in the spare...

don't "KNOW" if it is worth rapelling down to see...well lets not urge you on to much, just tell me where it is and i will save you the time. I will then tell you, that way way you will "KNOW".:D

  3. In 1998 another 50 year time capsule was buried in Tulsa. It had a prototype 1998 Plymouth Prowler in it. That should fare better than the Belvedere.

  4. Well Hell, they didn't just toss it in a hole. What is that stuff being sprayed into the tomb with the car?

  8. I remember that fiasco...supposedly al capone's hidden vault or somethin? I don't remember them finding anything but a coke bottle...I was kinda hopin for a caddy with 2" thick windows.

Mom said she lived in Tulsa when they buried the thing, she moved away in '68 and left a '65 plymouth sport fury that needed a tune-up to be buried under some new highway project :(

Since this post won't die, an update...

First we have a winner!!! All that was found in "Al Capones safe" or tomb orwas it Rivera's tomb? Anyways, all that was found was on coke bottle which I'm sure they threw away.

This was before Ebay or he probably could have sold it to some nutbag for a million.

Now the buried Plymouth. I say we have a no shit car people get together at the unearthing. Take this town over.

Now, they are renovating Downtown Tulsa. And by renovating they mean taking out everything that made it cool "back in the day" that they didn't keep up so the Downtown died. Now a couple bajillion dollars later they are building a bunch of new shit that nobody wanted and that they also won't keep up. Would have been real cool to actually restore some of the shit they tore down, but I digress....

During the "renovating" of the street near this particular site they tore open a time capsule made of steel. You could nearly hear the giant shit they took all the way across town. They called for boroscopes and shit and realized that they had ripped open a smaller time capsule buried near it that was full of school papers and things from school students at the time. Basically anything the students thought would be of interest in 2007.

That was the story anyway. I think they ripped the real deal open and didn't want a mutiny.:D

  12. By the time I buy mountain climbing gear, a truck with a winch with 75 feet of cable and 4x4 so I don't tear up the lawn at the top of the hill, I'll have spent $7500 to recover an engine that might be worth $1000 if it's not rotted to shit inside....

I'll stick to the 392 short block I did find in an Imperial for a lot less money.

  13. I have broadband and that video was the slowest download since I had dialup.

It appears that some precautions were taken to preserve the Belvedere. If you watched the film can you tell me what was being sprayed into the vault?

I support the plan to make this exhumation a "Car Event DeLuxe".

  22. Evidently HAMBers are begining to hound the Tulsa Historical Society. You goons. This was on AOL news this morning. The actual event is shaping up to be beyond anyone's control

Car Buried in 1957 Will Be Unearthed in 2007
    AP
TULSA, Okla. (Dec. 12) - A Plymouth Belvedere that was buried in a concrete vault nearly 50 years ago as part of the state's golden anniversary celebration will be unearthed in 2007 as part of the Oklahoma centennial festivities.

The 1957 Belvedere is underground next to the Tulsa County Courthouse. Also buried with it were five gallons of gas and a case of beer.

Old news reports indicate the gas was buried in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007 and no fuel was available. Other buried items include the contents of a woman's purse: 14 bobby pins, a lipstick, a pack of gum, tissues, a pack of cigarettes and matches and $2.43.

There was also an unpaid parking ticket, a bottle of tranquilizers and a spool of microfilm, which records the entries of a contest held to determine the winner of the car. The person to guess Tulsa's population in 2007 or the heirs of that person were to win the car and a $100 savings account.

Assuming an average annual interest of 5 percent compounded quarterly, such an account would be worth almost $1,200 today, if the account could be found.

The account was set up at a savings and loan that was taken over by Sooner Federal, which was liquidated during the savings and loan bust of the early 1990s. The committee has been trying to find the account, so far without success.

It's not clear exactly how the items were prepared for burial, or how they may have held up for all these years.

The Tulsa Historical Society and the centennial committee have been getting inquiries from all over the world about the car, including one from a Scandinavian who claims to have an exact twin of the buried Belvedere.

This got me wondering so I sent an email to the lady in charge of the Centennial Celebration.

She says the records show that the car was wrapped in "film" and the rest of the crypt was filled with Styrolene or Cosmolene. The reports conflict on the substance used.

"Film" sounds like something to hold the water in and help it rust-out a little more and "Styrolene or Cosmolene" sounds like something that will make it explode when it is opened... :D

    What is Cosmolene amd Styrolene?

  28. Don't forget to bring a trailer so that we can sneak that sucker out...!!!;)

  29. Of course. Beer and Sta-Bil is a long time favorite of Tulsanites and was first poured by the drink at "Turk's Luxury Lounge" in 1947.
