Like the title says, wanting to convert a 292 auto to a 4 or 5 speed. What am I gonna need? I've got a clutch pedal setup but are the hangers the same from auto to standard?
IIRC, the dash-to-firewall brace is the same but the manual braces have a few more brackets bolted on for the clutch pedal return stop and helper spring. These could be fabricated, a parts diagram will show more.
I was thinking that the pedal hangers were the same from auto to standard but wasn't sure. Anyone know of a bellhousing adapter to allow a saginaw 4 speed behind the 292 or am I stuck with a T-5 from a Mustang?
Ford used two V8 transmission bolt patterns for our era. The '49-64 narrow and the '65-early '80s wide. I see a lot of '62-64 Ford 4-speeds for sale, usually fairly cheap as there's a pretty limited market for them. Most will be T10s, although a few first-year toploaders show up from time to time. Any of these will be a bolt-in deal behind the 292 and plenty strong enough. The later trans can be made to work in most cases with drilling the narrow pattern holes, you may even run into one with both patterns drilled. But you will likely have to turn the input bearing cover OD down a 1/8" (IIRC) to match your early bell. Do this and it's a bolt-in too.
