I'm having some fuel delivery problems with my '57 Ranchero. I knew there was some rust/dirt in the tank because I could see remnants of it in my fuel filter (installed before the fuel pump). I ***umed the tanks was probably really rusty/nasty inside so I dropped the tank this weekend. While draining it, once the fuel level dropped, the fuel stream coming out of the tank pickup just stopped but there was still a good 4 gallons of gas in the tank. (I know this because I dropped the tank only to realize it wasn't empty and I poured the remaing fuel into my gas can.) What surprised me when I looked inside the tank was actually how clean it was in there. Very little rust but there is definitely dirt in it. I'm ***uming the pickup sock is clogged but how do I clean it??? The holes in the tank where the filler neck and the sending unit go are too small to reach my hand into the tank. thanks in advance for the advice, David <!-- / message -->
Far as I remember there is no sock on it, just an angle cut tube pointing towards the bottom of the tank.
Interesting....Mine definitely has a sock on it. When I looked in the tank I see the pickup tube and at the end it has a whitish mesh screen looking thing about 2 inches long on it. Could I just take the screen thing off of the pickup tube and run it like that??
you can run it without the screen (sock) make sure you have a good filter inline though ive heard people(friends) pour a gallon or two of acetone in the tank and throw in a couple of rocks yes rocks and swish it around and then dump it out this is for really nasty dirty rusty tanks i just take mine to the local chemical dipper and they take care of it but now with the readily avail repo tanks out there sometimes its cheaper to buy a new one then have it cleaned lf you want to run a sock what i did on my gfs 50 pontiac was i bought a sock for a later car and slipped it on the pick up and then put a clamp on it to hold it
It's a ranchero and the wagons and rancheros have a VERY weird shape tank that surrounds the spare tire well. My Edsel wagon's PO couldn't find a tank and cut the whole spare tire well out to put a blazer tank in it. It took 3 junkyard wagons to find enough metal to rebuild that spare well area, and none off the 4 tanks I found were saveable. Bob Drake made replacement tanks for a while and I scored one.
Hook up your air hose to it and blow it off. Did that years ago, before pumps in tanks. Never even dropped tank.
I chased a used tank for my Ranchero for quite a while before I broke down and bought a new one from a guy I found on the HAMB. He is near Dallas and not only had a fair price, but was the only one in stock anywhere. Bad news, I don't remember his name. The way that tank is made, they hold water on top of the tank in the spare resess and rust out from the top down.
That near Dallas guy would be Don Hyde. His business is called Ford Craft. It was a Bob Drake repop tank that he was selling.Dont know if he has any left but certainly worth a call. Oldmics
Thanks guys for all of the info and suggestions. I'm gonna try to remove the sock from the pick-up tube and try the acetone to help clean the inside of the tank. Perhaps I should try cleaning the fuel line too? Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
id just replace the lines all the way to the carb either bend your own or see if they sell the prebents for a ranchero
Hey oldmics, I tried googling ford craft and don hyde,,,no luck. got a numer or a link for him? Maybe a complete business name? I need a tank also. Many thanks
