Picked up this new driver to drive and fix up. Biggest issue right now is hesitation when accelerating. It only does it right off and it will die if i do not baby it for a second or two. it revs up great when in park, but once in gear it hesitates. Once it gets past it, it does great. Any ideas?
Even though it revs perfectly in neutral? Carb shouldn't be too old. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Could be the plugs. Might be the wires. Could be the points. Might be the coil. Could be a vac leak. Might be a lot of things, or a combination of them, But I'd start with the accelerator pump. It might just need to be adjusted.
Might try just increasing the idle rpm a little, I had the same problem with my 60 Impala when I got it last year. I did rebuild the carb and put a new gas tank in. Get a vacuum gauge, they are cheap, and will tell you a lot about the state of your engine -they come with diagnostic instructions.
You can check the accell pump just by looking down the carb and watching the squirt -not running of course. It should look like a squirt gun.
The front two squirt just fine. The rears do not but.I.***ume those are secondary? Carbs are my weak point if you can't tell. I will try adjusting the rpm. That could be it as it revs higher in neutral and doesnt stall. But revs lower in gear and that's when it stalls. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
It might help it you tell us exactly what motor/carb you have in your Edsel No matter, I would start by doing a tune up, e.g. cap, rotor, plugs, wires, points, condenser. Since it's new to you those parts are suspect from the get go. Your correct about the acc pump, you should have a healthy squirt from them. Adjust the idle to whatever the factory says it should be at, anything higher on a stock motor is just a bandaid on the true symptom. I would also check for vacuum leaks, my preferred method is to use a squirt bottle of water, and spray it anywhere that could leak. If their is a leak, the sound of the motor will change. Next I would look at whether it is properly timed and it correctly advances when the motor is revved. Hope this helps, report back with what you find
I replaced all ignition parts. Better but the same. I guess I need to check vacuum. Is there a place to start? Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
The car is not fixable. I will be over tomorrow morning a little before noon to take it off your hands!
Check for vacuum leaks as described above. As a measure of lack-o-faith, I'd put new rubber fuel line from the tank to the carb. Not a complete rubber line, just replace the rubber thats there. I burned a real nice car two weeks after buying it because of that. Your accelerator pump is also suspect. theyre easy to replace.
The vacuum gauge comes with instructions, and costs 10 to 15 bucks. Here is a link to the diagnostic chart: http://www.cl***ictruckshop.com/clubs/earlyburbs/projects/vac/uum.htm Adjust the idle speed while the car is in gear. Get a helper for this, it is a ***** to run along side your car and do this, and even harder to back peddle in front of it and get the screwdriver in there... ...your helper can push on the brake if it looks like you are gonna get run over Kelvin
Cleaned up the carb, and checked for vac*** leaks. Runs much better. I still need to clean the gas tank and few other things, but no hesitation anymore.
its the accelerator pump, yes it will work fine in neutral because the engine is not under a load...you need that "squirt" of fuel coming off idle to lug 3800 pounds from a stop.....accelerator pump is not working, or your squirters are clogged...have the carb rebuilt by someone who knows how to do it right. make sure its timed right, and has good points, plugs, wires, and check the vacuum advance too.
