58 ford f100 v8 swap options?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by punchdrunk, Sep 20, 2012.

  1. I Had a 58'. I Put a Late Camaro Front Clip On It. Now You Have Disc Brakes, Power Steering, and a 350 sbc. Just An Idea.

  2. y block is the way to go.. you need a y block bell housing, v8 radiator, I think the firewall part of the gas pedal is different on a v8 , and you have to move the fuel line to the other side. i think you could put in a FE using ford parts . they put 352s in 65, 66 f350s and 4wds
and they still mounted th engine at the front and the bellhousing.

Besides being a very anal "chevy lover", how much crack do you actually smoke each morning before breakfast?

    ??

    apparently it's a lot

Yea I'm definately going with a y block sounds like a better option, I've found 1 near by actually to its about a hour drive its a 239 1954 Ford engine just wondering would this engine be a good reliable engine is supposed to be ready to run with automatic trans for $500 or wait and look for 292 or better motor

  7. Hate to say it but stay away from a '54 239. They use a different cam and are hard to do anything performance wise. Find a later 292 they are just as cheep and have more options.

  8. Exactly! Later model 292 or get a 312. If you.aren't worried about horse power or building a race motor...272 isn't bad either.

I drove my '59 F100 for more than 30 years. Started out as a 292/3-speed. After rebuilding that engine twice I put in a 400M/C-6. I know, 400M's are not very popular, but I put more than 400,000 miles on that combo with virtually little or no problems. It can be done with very little or no welding, using a simple trans crossmember out of a '68 or '69 Ford (I think) shortened a few inches. The front mounts are super easy to build and I used the stock radiator. Even the 3 speed column linkage was modified slightly for the C-6. I did end up swapping the 4:11 rear to a more highway friendly 2:78 (or so). No racer, but cheap, easy, and dependable.

A Ford 429 police interceptor and a C-6 works well!!!!! If you want to stay on the cheap go pick up a wrecked Mustang (there is always a pile of them at the yard) and swap in the drivetrain. 20MPG on the highway and still enough power to have fun.
