Any help out there or pictures or any experience rebuilding one of these things ? Help, I have a problem with the gear selector Thanks for your help in advance
Thanks but not much help. Anybody have any idea how this monky motion works ? I did find a 62 out of a car and have some idea, but I real nice exploded view of the parts would be great. Thanks again for any help
Factory service manual or a parts book should have that. Imperial's a little different because the buttons are vertical rather than horizontal, but it boils down to a couple of cables that shift the trans and a lot of things that can rust or have old lube dry out and get sticky.
I just got the one in my '62 Chrysler working, it was a cable adjustment at the transmission that was the problem, felt like you were halfway between neutral and drive or reverse all the time. Is that what yours is doing? My buttons were also binding up, where one would not release when the other was pressed, turned out to be a cable routing issue, if the cable has any pressure on it it'll be harder to shift, mine got re-routed around a bracket and now it works great. The last thing you want to do is take the dash mechanism apart. Clean it and lightly oil it maybe, but that's it.
I don't know how different a 58 Imperial shifter is from a 62 300 but I would guess they are functionally similar. I have a 62 shifter on my bench, I can take some close up pictures of it this evening and send them to you.
