I recently purchased/resurrected a 59 Caddy 2 dr cp that has been in storage for 21 years. I noticed the floorboard on P/S had some surface rust inside and suspect a bad heater core. Once I got the car running and turned on the defroster the window fogged up pretty much confirming my su****ions. My question is this....how difficult is it to remove the heater core in a 59 caddy and where do I start? Also, is the heater control valve inside the heater box as well and could that be the culprit? Thanks in advance guys. Glen
I did a few years ago and I can say without reservation, it's a sum*****! You didn't state whether it also has factory A/C but I would imagine it does. Seems to me ,everything is done from under the dash for the heater core so get ready to tie yourself into a pretzel shape.
Unhook heater hoses on firewall side. Take off top dash pad, remove glovebox liner, unhook bowden cables and defroster duct. remove right kick panel to unhook air supply if with A/C. Pull back carpet take out screws. I think there were two nuts on studs on firewall side. work unit out. Split case. Quite easy as heater cores go. 2-3 hours with a helper to guide heater core tubes through firewall. C/D's of shop manual are $20 on evilbay
x2 here. We did it on my buddy's car about four years ago...Just make sure the skinny guy gets under the dash...
Thanks guys....yes...it does have factory A/C and NO.....Im NOT going to be the "Skinny guy"...lol The good thing is...I have to remove the front seat and old carpet anyway in prep for interior re-do....and the dash pad is beat......so these things things removed will make it an easier task. Thanks again!
heater control valve inside the heater box as well and could that be the culprit? yes that i had that problem once if it is the valve have the core pressure tested or replace it dont find out the hard way and just replace one and not test the other been there done that Paul Jug
