I finally found a little time to try and work on my 59 cadillac today. It doesnt idle when in gear it just stalls unless you hold the gas dow and sometimes that not enough. i figured id start with the visually obvious. the carb base gasket was leaking . so i pulled it apart to replace it with a gasket i order a couple months ago. there where 4 gaskets under the carb? a rubber one on top, than a metal thin one, than a thick hard one which i broke, than a another thin one that seamed to be made of the same material that intake gaskets are made of. my question is - is this how they came from the factory or did some one put them on ? what purpose do they serve and do i need them? i only have a replacement for the top gasket. after this is fixed i will change everything from the points to the plugs. the carb was recently rebuilt just before i got the car less than 2 years ago any help would be great thanks john
The stainless plate probably belongs there. My '66 275hp 327 with Carter AVS has the same gasket stack. Is there a channel in the intake right under the carb? It's plugged with carbon. If you clean it out you will find a hole going down each side into the heat crossover passage. It runs exhaust heat under the carb for preheat when cold. The stainless plate below the carb keeps the exhaust from blowing directly on the carb. The only thing I don't remember is if from the factory there was a gasket between the stainless plate and the carb. Most of the time when you take one apart you will see what you have; gasket/stainless/gasket/carb. Since you're in Jersey, I'd keep the heat crossover. Clean it all out. Put it back together in the same order. Don't over torque the carb mounting studs. Those AFB's are great carbs. Super simple to clean up. Holler if you need any more help.
F/T/C, The following is how I run an AFB on a stock cast iron manifold on a 283 chev. The manifold and carb are from a 300hp/327 all stock. First a std.carb base gasket, next the thin metal gasket, another std.carb gasket, the bakelite spacer, another std.gasket, another thin metal plate, another std gasket and FINALLY the AFB. All this is pretty much as it came from GM. The idea is not to cook/perculate the gas in the carb.Isolate it from the hot cast iron manifold. Good luck,265glide.
thanks ! next problem - how do i find the bottom gasket and the thick middle gasket? the only thing ive found at the local parts stores and rockauto is the top thin rubber like gasket. thanks again john
Check with NAPA...they mite be able to order it for you...if not, some of the specialty Cad places -- USA parts in Virginia (www.usapartssupply.com) or McVey's in Kansas (913-722-0707). R-
THANKS i got the spacer from www.usapartssupply.com and the metal shim and gaskets from daytona parts. the assymbly manuel shows a regular gasket on the intake, than the spacer, than a regular gasket, than the metal shim, than the carb. and that channel in the intake was clogged bad. i still havnt done the reinstall yet though. anybody know a good place for distributor rebuilding?? thanks John
