Projects 59 El Camino.. Build Pics

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by J.Fishbeck, Jan 2, 2010.

  1. I didn't know this was going to be such a 'rust'-O-ration.. Thanks, I appreciate the good words!

  2. I finished up the valve body, on my 700R4. The T.V spring needed to be changed, to complete the Bowtie Overdrive set up. Changed the 4th gear pressure switch & installed the govenor in the side. Put the new speedo gears & assy in, too.

Need to find two more Torq Thrusts, for a set! I remember when Pomona Swap Meet was the M/F spot.. now, not so much

Then I found my horn button, polished it up & can't believe how nice it is. Chrome isn't what it used to be. This thing sat outside, with no windows & is still beautiful. Matches the horn ring, I just bought!

I looked at an early picture, and seen the horn button still on the car.. so I knew I had it here, somewhere!

So you're not going with the big inchers now?

  4. I was telling HemiFarris, I would take pictures with HAMB friendly wheels on when it's done. Just to play nice! That way I won't be recognized at all, when I'm out in the streets. I'll b Mr. Icognito! Grin

this build is looking good, can't wait to see it finished.

  6. Thanks, I appreciate it!

  7. This morning I picked up the last of my moldings, from Sihilling Polishing! Beautiful 'driver' quality..

Then it was up to Gazelle Machining, to put in some time up there.. I was a hole tapping fool, today!

I took this picture to show the rough cut pattern in the rear mold. I thought it was cool lookin'. The front mold has just had its finishing cut, waiting to be wet sand & then sandblasted

I just came across this build thread and had to register! I have a '59 that I'm restoring as well, and a number of your pics have given me ideas about how to repair places on mine (rear quarter, etc). Great project!

  9. Thanks. Glad to help! I look forward to seeing progress pictures.

Here's a couple pics of how mine is coming along. I just picked up a rotisserie, so the plan for the winter is to have pretty much all the sheet metal work done.

  11. That is real cool.. Damn, I remember being where you are! I look forward to having a rotisserie, for future builds. Keep the progress reports coming, it's definitely a motivator!

  12. Well, I finally had a little time to work on the Elky, today. I finished the metal work on the drvrs qtr, an I cleaned up the bedfloor. It wasn't a high point, grinding all the grimey paint and rust off! Some more time, this time with the paint & rust stripper wheels, will have it looking a little better.

I've been working on my friends 66 VW Beetle, since he just got back from the military. The least I could do for my country! Changed out the clutch & just about went over everything on that bug. Towed it in.. an it was soo cool watching it drive away! The little clips that hold the t/o bearing to the clutch fork, blow my mind. (Wrong forum, but I like 57 & older bugs)

Make sure you have the correct pressure plate for the t/o bearing, or those little clips go bye bye very fast! I was 17, and able to change those clips in 20 minutes and be back on the road until I figured out WTF was wrong! I think I went through a 1/2 dozen of them (reused some of them most of the time). Anyway, back to the '59. I like this build. You can see the breath being blown back into the 'ol girl.

  15. I always try to bring the orig. parts with, easier for the the parts counter guy & myself. There's a 180 or 200 clutch.. This one was the 180. Another friend of mine found a 56 with semaphores.. So it looks like I'm going to be working on these two bugs, keeping them running.

I'm working at the machine shop today, getting closer to making the bottoms to my t/gate hinges. Then I can finish up the bodywork, concerning the whole rr end. Ok, back to work

Jay, You may have mentioned it before but what color will your interior, dash, steering wheel be?...........Mike

  19. just got home from work, not used to this yet! The color is matched to the material I bought. So there is no name for it. The material is named, sierra green. I posted a pic of the card they shot to match it. Sorry, I don't know exactly which post it was. But it's monthes back, post wise. Glad these molds will be done tomorrow.. Goodnite, yall

  23. So, All the paint is removed from the underside of the drivers fin.
I used a dolly, and pushed out all the dents in the drivers wheel wells.
I put the window regulator and t/lite assy together. It moves pretty fast!
I welded up the cancer in the drivers wheel well.
Also welded up the rear sill, where the t/gate and that meet.(last picture)

Tomorrow, I will fab up & weld in a mounting bracket for the window regulator motor

Damn dude, the gas door opener is all kinda nutty scientist, I dig it, post a video of it working so I can wrap my thick skull around it.

  25. Nads, I love the Batman emblem in the divider panel, F*&k the nay sayers!(did you use galvinized steel?) Yeah, I will post a video.. It seriously feels, like I will never be done with that t/lite shit! I must be getting close, then. Exactly to what.. I don't know yet! I dont want any gas fumes, igniting when the brushes and the armature spark.

My daily 57, needed frt tires & some positive camber by removing some adjustment shims. Tightened up the control arms & steering box bolts. Lubed the whole front end, too! So I went down the street to the local tire store "Bob & Al's" I seen this, 53 Jag XK120 there, at the tire shop. Today is San Bernardino's "Route 66" show, and the owner from Riverside had it out to cruise.

J, this thread is gold. I'm going to crack this back open when I start my Elky restoration and suck out all the great info and techniques. Great work, I'll be watching the progress. Thanks for documenting everything you've done.

That Jag is every kinda sexy.

  28. I am fortunate enough, to be able work on my own car right now. I don't know how long they keep threads open. I've only been here, less than a year now.

Can you explain the definition of 'gold chainer' to me! That Jag was money! O/T, but cool

  29. I can't speak for everyone, but I think what you're doing is what this forum is all about.

  30. Much gratitude, to ya! Old American Iron, is in my blood.. just like a lot of us! But I can't speak for anyone but me, either. Wouldn't want to, anyways.
