I've learned alot from this post. I always thought Loewy designed the cars he's given credit for doing. Now, with more background regarding the actual designer of the landmark "Loewy" cars, I can better understand this Cadillac. That said, I think you're probably right on the "only I know what is best" insight into the motivations behind this car. I actually like the over the top nature of the factory '59 styling. All of the GM coupes from '59 look pretty good to me in their factory clothes. I'd like to get a '59 Buick or Olds for that reason alone.

  2. Yeah, a bunch of car guys worked on the show and a big influence for the show was GMs Motoramas. Futurama's name came form them. We were realizing the furure as GM saw it in the 50s. Here's some cars I designed for the show for those who missed them on the Art Show...

    Here's a 'grounded' version

Then there's this quick sketch I did separate from, but related to, the show...

The '53 Stude was definitely the best looking American car that year. Its clean simple styling makes the entire General Motors line, for instance, look crude and outdated. That Stude predicted some of the nicest Italian styling of the following decade, Pinin Farina in particular.

That said, If Loewy indeed did design the '53 Stude, this '59 cad nightmare more than cancels out that anything else he ever put his name on.

  4. Quickly done, not so bad now. Fade paint, chrome wheels...

  6. this thread is so long i didnt read it all so sorry if this is double posted, but it reminds me of a certain 59 caddy the bones brigade chopped up in " in search of animalchin" hahahah actually the caddy in the movie looked tons better chopped up than this thing, i still dont think you could pay me enough money to cut those fins off perminently, they could be welded back on but that car is .....way out there. i know alot of people dont like fin and espescially the 59 caddy but i really dig those cars........with the fins on them.
