Looking for thoughts on a rad for my pickup. The original V8 rad has the upper necks angled where the 59A style were straight out. Pics of what you used would be fantastic as well.
If you go with the stock style radiator with the angled necks, the new Bob Drake one piece top and bottom hoses fit perfectly. Only four clamps, too. $60. If you order, say a Walker, get them to put in the 45° necks, as their straight necks exit from the rear face of the tank, rather than the bottom. Do you have a stock 32? Got mine boiled and checked, and it's cooling my 59AB just fine, so far.
Just take your original get it boiled, checked and the proper spouts put in it. it fits the grill shell and who else has an original in their trad rod. you will be the coolest guy on the block.
Sorry by your post I thought you had one. My mistake. Walker makes a good deuce rad and when you order all you have to do is tell 'em what you got. They'll send it to you just like you need it bolt it in and go.
If you get a Walker, ask them to tip the lower outlets down ten degrees. It will make getting hoses on a much easier job. Would be worth any extra they may charge you.
Thanks folks !! I am not having much luck, to this point, in locating an original plus I suspect, in Deuce inflated $$$`s, it may be spendy
The problem with original radiators is WE cannot restore them to usable condition. It's a fairly specialized talent needed to recore and resolder them. And the few real remaining radiator shops that do this kind of work will probably charge you close to what a Walker would cost, and you will still have 83 year old tanks and outlets on them, ready to crack. Save the originals for the restorers and super-anal traditional hot rodders. Buy a Walker.
The only issue with the Walker is I can not seem to find one with the stock filler neck where it should be. Brass works also has one, a little spendier but suppose to be a copy of the original.
If you think Walker radiators are spendy, try Steve Long Indy, his are without a doubt one of the higher end priced rads, but worth it, custom built and HD throughout.
I've done several flathead deuce roadsters with Walker radiators and early style heads. I use a Speedway hose kit made for the 37-39 Ford. Part number 91015842, looks good and fits like it was made for the deuce. Radiator is a FH-Z-491-2. 1 3/4 inlets and outlets. I've always used them just the way Walker makes them.
If you order direct from Walker they can add a fake filler neck to the top of the tank that the stock cap will attach to for an additional charge. Or, since the bottom of the cap has a threaded hole to retain the gasket and tab you can cut out a circular piece of steel just bigger than the hole in the shell, drill a hole in the center of it and bolt the cap onto the shell permanently. I have used a handful of Walker radiators over the years and have always been very pleased with both form and function. I'm using one now for my own '32 Pickup and am pleased to say that the '32 commercial shell fits the radiator perfectly. Also, I bought mine from Speedway. If you join they're E-mail list they give you a free shipping coupon right up front for joining. I used it for the radiator and saved over $50!
I have an original 32 with good cores cooling my 8ba just fine... unfortunately the tanks are pinholing... everytime one gets fixed another shows up... I've been using JB weld to seal the small leaks lately until I buy a walker.
Don't need a pressure. The original rads never had a pressurized system. Drove my flathead dodge powered M37 everywhere on the original rad and it wasn't pressurized. Just had huge capacity and a good fan and shroud. Never got even close to hot even in Kamloops desert 40*c temps.
That is what I was under the impression as well. I asked the question regarding first year of pressurized systems and it was into the 50`s.
Bought new cap guts for my 34 rad. It isn't pressurized. But it is a five core staggered tube. And the second one it a huge tube three core.
Whatever. Just tell Walker what you are planning on doing with your cap. And then later when your flatty overheats, please update this thread.
Another high quality radiator company is Custom Auto Radiator in NJ. They made a copper/brass one for my '32 and project BBF '40. They will work with you on modifications while some companies will not, and cost is similar to other copper/brass units.
The coolest running flathead I ever had was my 32 hiboy back in the middle 80's. Ran a stock 32 radiator I found at a swap meet for 100 bucks, had it tested, my rad guy thought it had been re cored at some time with an industrial core, like the ones in stationary generators/compressors/ forklifts etc. I have used a few Walkers since, they seem a bit fragile compared to the original and never seemed to run as cool.
